ATOS 2.6 (LEIA 2.1-11) – NTLH

Pentecostes sempre cativou a imaginação da Igreja. Apesar de o acontecimento ser mencionado na Bíblia apenas uma vez por Dr. Lucas, o Dia de Pentecostes ganhou lugar de destaque no calendário cristão. Tornou-se também, o ponto central dos grandes “avivamentos” dos séculos XVIII e XIX, culminando com os movimentos pentecostal e carismático dos séculos XX e XXI.

Com certeza, Lucas nunca imaginou que sua narração modesta dos eventos do Dia de Pentecostes serviria para transmitir conceitos contrários a sua mensagem central.

A mensagem central de Pentecostes é a universalização do Evangelho e a igualdade de todos diante de Deus. Foi um fenômeno que rompeu todas as barreiras: de nacionalismo porque estavam presentes pessoas de “todas as nações do mundo” e de linguagem porque todos ouviram na sua própria língua. Juntos receberam o mesmo dom de Deus. Em um só momento o Evangelho se tornou mundial. Esta mensagem é tão contrária à natureza humana que a Igreja não conseguiu sustentá-la.

Desde o início começaram a aparecer deturpações e distorções. Logo nasceu o elitismo espiritual e a fragmentação dentro da própria Igreja. A linguagem unificadora, entendida por todos, se transformou em “línguas estranhas”, entendidas somente por uma minoria de privilegiados. O que era uma solução por derrubar barreiras entre culturas e línguas diferentes se transformou em “problema” que separava pessoas que antes falavam a mesma língua! Paulo foi forçado a dedicar grandes trechos de suas cartas para combater as divisões criadas pelos desvios do pentecostismo de sua época. O pentecostismo anti-pentecostal continua a afligir a Igreja hoje.

O Pentecostes de Lucas é um convite para repensarmos a nossa postura e prática. A essência de Pentecostes é derrubar barreiras de todos os tipos que separam as pessoas. Podemos trabalhar as nossas próprias barreiras internas. Se a nossa religião nos dá motivo para nos afastarmos dos outros por eles serem diferentes na sua cultura religiosa, devemos repensar a nossa fé. Será que Deus está falando com eles numa linguagem que nós não conseguimos entender? Ao desrespeitarmos a religiosidade alheia, podemos estar desprezando as outras linguagens que Deus usa para falar conosco. O Pentecostes é deixar Deus falar para que cada um possa ouvir na sua própria língua.

ATOS 2:1-11 – NOVA TRADUҪÃO NA LINGUAGEM DE HOJE 2000 (NTLH)

A VINDA DO ESPÍRITO SANTO

Quando chegou o dia de Pentecostes, todos os seguidores de Jesus estavam reunidos no mesmo lugar. De repente, veio do céu um barulho que parecia o de um vento soprando muito forte e esse barulho encheu toda a casa onde estavam sentados. Então todos viram umas coisas parecidas com chamas, que se espalharam como línguas de fogo; e cada pessoa foi tocada por uma dessas línguas. Todos ficaram cheios do Espírito Santo e começaram a falar em outras línguas, de acordo com o poder que o Espírito dava a cada pessoa.

Estavam morando ali em Jerusalém judeus religiosos vindos de todas as nações do mundo. Quando ouviram aquele barulho, uma multidão deles se ajuntou, e todos ficaram muito admirados porque cada um podia entender na sua própria língua o que os seguidores de Jesus estavam dizendo. A multidão ficou admirada e espantada e comentava:

— Estas pessoas que estão falando assim são da Galileia! Como é que cada um de nós as ouvimos falar na nossa própria língua? Nós somos da Pártia, da Média, do Elão, da Mesopotâmia, da Judeia, da Capadócia, do Ponto, da província da Ásia, da Frígia, da Panfília, do Egito e das regiões da Líbia que ficam perto de Cirene. Alguns de nós são de Roma. Uns são judeus, e outros, convertidos ao Judaísmo. Alguns são de Creta, e outros, da Arábia. E como é que todos estamos ouvindo essa gente falar em nossa própria língua a respeito das grandes coisas que Deus tem feito?

RETHINKING PENTECOST

Acts 2:6 (read 2:1-11) - NIV

Pentecost has always captivated the imagination of the Church. In spite of the fact that the event is mentioned only once in the Bible, the Day of Pentecost has won a prominent place in the Christian calendar. It also became the central point of the great "revivals" of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, culminating in the Pentecostal and charismatic movements of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Certainly, Lucas never imagined that his modest narration of the Day of Pentecost would later serve to convey concepts contrary to its central message.

The central message of the Day of Pentecost is that all peoples are equal before God and that God speaks to everyone in his or her own language. It was a phenomenon that broke all national and linguistic barriers, because there were people there from “from every nation under heaven” who spoke many different languages, but everyone heard in his or her own language. Together they received the same message about the pouring out of the Spirit on all people.

But it was not long before misrepresentations and distortions started to appear. With the passage of time a language that everyone could understand morphed into an unintelligible jabbering called “speaking in tongues” that only a spiritual elite spoke and understood and which needed translators to interpret it to weaker believers. What was meant to be unifying became divisive. What was to be a solution for breaking down barriers between diverse cultures and languages became problem that separated people who spoke the same language. Paul was forced to spend large parts of his letters to counter divisions created by the pentecostalism deviations of his time. Pentecostalism continues to afflict the Church today.

Luke's Pentecost is an invitation to rethink our attitude and practice. The essence of Pentecost is to break down barriers of all types that separate people. We need to work on our own internal barriers. If our religion gives us motive for separating ourselves from the others because they are different from us in their religious orientation, we must rethink our faith. God may be speaking to them in a language that we cannot understand. When we run down someone else's religion we may be rejecting the other languages that God uses to speak to people who are different from us. The purpose of Pentecost is to recognize that God speaks to each one in his or her own language.

THE HOLY SPIRIT COMES AT PENTECOST

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”

PARAÍSO JÁ

Então vi um novo céu e uma nova terra.

Apocalipse 21.1 (leia 21.1-8) – NTLH

A finalidade do Apocalipse não é fornecer um mapa para mostrar os acontecimentos do futuro. É a descrição da realidade, do presente momento! Quem usa o livro para tentar descobrir o que acontecerá na história perde toda a sua essência. Os que estavam constantemente correndo perigo de serem presos, torturados e mortos pela fé em Jesus, não tinham o luxo de ficar satisfazendo curiosidades a respeito de acontecimentos lá na frente dos séculos e milênios vindouros! Isto não passaria de capricho dos acomodados.

O “novo céu” e a “nova terra” já eram realidades. A “Nova Jerusalém” já havia descido. A morada de Deus já estava entre os seres humanos. Falava de realidades atuais. O enfoque era o “agora”. “Agora faço novas todas as coisas!” “Tudo está feito!” Foi escrito para o “hoje”, não “amanhã ou depois”!...

Aos olhos da fé, existem realidades maiores, além dos “fatos” imediatos. A própria ciência afirma este princípio. Primeiro veio a física newtoniana (clássica) que visa o universo como gigantesca máquina cósmica governada por leis matemáticas de causas e efeitos. Esta foi a visão científica durante três séculos, até a época de Einstein no início do século passado. Nasceu a física quântica que trata do comportamento do mundo subatômico, mudando radicalmente a visão do universo. Não é mais como máquina, mas como organismo. As leis da física clássica são limitadas na sua aplicação.

Como a física quântica deu uma nova visão do mundo material, o Apocalipse ajudou os cristãos perseguidos a terem uma nova visão do que estava acontecendo a seu redor.

Dentro das realidades duras, caóticas e impiedosas da nossa existência diária, podemos participar da ordem cósmica. Incrível que pareça, esta ordem cósmica está dentro de nós. O autor do Apocalipse estava revelando sua realidade interna. Era uma visão, não previsão!... Sua força interna era maior do que as forças externas. Deus e O Cordeiro, que já reinavam dentro e eram mais poderosos do que os perigos que o cercavam.

Os “paraísos” e “infernos” não são lugares lá fora, mas condições do espírito humano. Estamos construindo os nossos paraísos e infernos... Ambos estão dentro de nós. O nosso paraíso não depende de condições externas, embora essas possam reforçá-lo. Mesmo dentro da prisão, Paulo e Silas cantavam, presos e livres ao mesmo tempo! Sem sabermos como, Deus está fazendo novas todas as coisas!...

APOCALIPSE 21.1-8 – NOVA TRADUÇÃO NA LINGUAGEM DE HOJE 2000 (NTLH)

O NOVO CÉU E A NOVA TERRA

Então vi um novo céu e uma nova terra. O primeiro céu e a primeira terra desapareceram, e o mar sumiu. E vi a Cidade Santa, a nova Jerusalém, que descia do céu. Ela vinha de Deus, enfeitada e preparada, vestida como uma noiva que vai se encontrar com o noivo. Ouvi uma voz forte que vinha do trono, a qual disse:

— Agora a morada de Deus está entre os seres humanos! Deus vai morar com eles, e eles serão os povos dele. O próprio Deus estará com eles e será o Deus deles. Ele enxugará dos olhos deles todas as lágrimas. Não haverá mais morte, nem tristeza, nem choro, nem dor. As coisas velhas já passaram.

Aquele que estava sentado no trono disse:

— Agora faço novas todas as coisas!

E também me disse:

— Escreva isto, pois estas palavras são verdadeiras e merecem confiança.

E continuou:

— Tudo está feito! Eu sou o Alfa e o Ômega, o Princípio e o Fim. A quem tem sede darei água para beber, de graça, da fonte da água da vida. Aqueles que conseguirem a vitória receberão de mim este presente: eu serei o Deus deles, e eles serão meus filhos. Mas os covardes, os traidores, os que cometem pecados nojentos, os assassinos, os imorais, os que praticam a feitiçaria, os que adoram ídolos e todos os mentirosos, o lugar dessas pessoas é o lago onde queima o fogo e o enxofre, que é a segunda morte.

PARADISE NOW

Revelation 21:1 (read 21:1-8) - NIV

The purpose of the Book of Revelation was not to provide a map to show future events. It was a description of the reality of that time in history. Those who use the book to project end time events miss the central message. The book’s readers were constantly in danger of being arrested, tortured and killed for their faith in Jesus and did not have the luxury to speculate about events that were to happen centuries or millennia in the future. Today’s comfortable accommodated Christians have the luxury of using the Book of Revelation for speculative purposes.

The "new heaven" and the "new earth" were already realities. The "New Jerusalem" had already descended and the dwelling place of God was already among humans. The author wrote about current realities. The focus was on the "now." "I am making everything new!” "It is done!" it was written for the "today" of that time, not for the "tomorrow or the next". The words were written for their eyes to read and for them to see beyond apparent realities.

To the eyes of faith, there are larger realities beyond immediate "facts". Science itself affirms this principle. First came Newtonian physics (classical) which interpreted the universe as being a gigantic cosmic machine governed by mathematical laws of cause and effect. This was the scientific view during three centuries until Einstein's time at the beginning of the last century. Quantum physics was developed which deals with subatomic behavior which radically changed the view of the universe. It is no longer viewed as a machine (passive mechanism), but as a body (dynamic organism). The classical laws of physics are limited in their application.

As quantum physics gave a new vision of what was viewed as a material universe, the Book of Revelation helped the persecuted Christians to have a new vision of what was really happening around them.

Within the harsh realities of a chaotic and unforgiving daily existence we can participate in a cosmic order. Amazingly, this cosmic order is within us. The author of Revelation was revealing our inner reality. It was a vision, not forecast! Our inner strength is greater than the external forces. In reality it is God and the Lamb, who reign and are more powerful than the dangers around us.

"Paradise" and "Hell" are not places out there, but conditions of the human spirit. We are building our own heavens and hells. Both are within us. Our paradise does not depend on external conditions, although these can reinforce them. Even in prison, Paul and Silas were able to sing, because they were prisoners and free at the same time! Even without understanding how it is being done, we can believe that God is making all things new!

He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

SEMEADORES DA PAZ

Apocalipse 7.9 (leia 7.9-17) – NTLH

O livro do Apocalipse foi escrito para fortalecer os cristãos perseguidos. É provável que o escritor do Apocalipse se sentisse acuado diante da perseguição impiedosa do império romano contra os seguidores de Jesus. Aparentemente, eram poucas as pessoas que estavam resistindo as pressões para renunciar a fé em Jesus. Os cristãos pareciam uma “espécie em extinção”. No meio da crise brava, veio uma visão, mostrando que não era bem assim... O povo da fé, na realidade, incluía uma multidão inumerável de pessoas de “todas as nações, tribos, raças e línguas”. Era um número maior do que se podia imaginar...

O Apocalipse é um livro de interpretação muito difícil para a grande maioria dos cristãos da nossa época, pela razão que não é uma minoria perseguida. Ao contrário, é a maioria da população do mundo ocidental, maioria fragmentada, com grupos e tendências diversas e rivais. Alguns destes grupos se julgam os verdadeiros cristãos e não reconhecem a legitimidade dos outros. Outros são mais tolerantes, mas não chegam a comungar com os demais. O Apocalipse não trata da realidade do cristianismo do mundo atual.

O cristianismo de hoje é mais parecido com o império romano do que com os fiéis perseguidos dos primeiros séculos da era cristã. Nações “cristãs” fazem guerra contra as outras: cristãs e não cristãs.

Na ausência da perseguição, muitos usam o Apocalipse como instrumento de ataque contra os outros, tentando identificar a “besta”, o “anticristo” e os “falsos profetas”. O uso para tentar traçar os acontecimentos futuros, manipula os fiéis a seguir esta ou aquela linha de doutrina e prática.

Mesmo sendo maioria e possuindo uma tecnologia jamais alcançada, estamos num mundo fora do nosso controle. Criamos “monstros” que podem nos esmagar. A nossa violência está se virando contra nós. A própria natureza está reagindo: - aquecimento global e o aparecimento de doenças novas e incuráveis. Qual seria a mensagem deste livro para um cristianismo dominante, fragmentado, preconceituoso e, muitas vezes, perseguidor?: - fidelidade àquilo que Jesus ensinou. O simbolismo: “folhas de palmeira nas mãos” significa a rejeição da violência, do preconceito e do materialismo. Significa que a confiança de que a através da vivência da paz poderemos semear a paz, mesmo morrendo no processo. A atuação Divina é muito maior do que podemos imaginar. Não cabe a nós, sermos juízes, tomando a justiça em nossas mãos. Viver a justiça, confiando no “Cordeiro” que realmente reina apesar das aparências ao contrário. Assim, podemos pertencer a multidão oculta que semeia a paz.

A GRANDE MULTIDÃO

Depois disso olhei e vi uma multidão tão grande, que ninguém podia contar. Eram de todas as nações, tribos, raças e línguas. Estavam de pé diante do trono e do Cordeiro, vestidos de roupas brancas, e tinham folhas de palmeira nas mãos. E gritavam bem alto:

— Do nosso Deus, que está sentado no trono, e do Cordeiro vem a nossa salvação.

Todos os anjos estavam de pé em volta do trono, dos líderes e dos quatro seres vivos. Então eles se jogaram diante do trono, encostaram o rosto no chão e adoraram a Deus, dizendo:

— Amém! Ao nosso Deus pertencem para todo o sempre o louvor, a glória, a sabedoria, a gratidão, a honra, o poder e a força! Amém!

Um dos líderes me perguntou:

— Quem são estes que estão vestidos de branco? De onde foi que vieram?

— Eu não sei. O senhor sabe! — respondi.

Então ele me disse:

— Estes são os que atravessaram sãos e salvos a grande perseguição. São as pessoas que lavaram as suas roupas no sangue do Cordeiro, e elas ficaram brancas. É por isso que essas pessoas estão de pé diante do trono de Deus e o servem de dia e de noite no seu templo. E aquele que está sentado no trono as protegerá com a sua presença. Elas nunca mais terão fome nem sede. Nem o sol nem qualquer outro calor forte as castigará. Pois o Cordeiro, que está no meio do trono, será o pastor dessas pessoas e as guiará para as fontes das águas da vida. E Deus enxugará todas as lágrimas dos olhos delas.

SOWERS OF PEACE

After this I looked,
and there before me was a great multitude
that no one could count,
from every nation, tribe, people and language,
standing before the throne and before the Lamb.
They were wearing white robes
and were holding palm branches in their hands.

Revelation 7:9 (read 7:9-17) - NIV

The book of Revelation was written to strengthen the persecuted Christians of that time. It is likely that the author felt cornered before the merciless persecution of the Roman Empire against the followers of Jesus. Apparently there were few people who were resisting the pressure to renounce their faith in Jesus. Christians looked like an "endangered species". In the middle of the crisis the author had a vision showing that this was not so. The people of faith actually included an innumerable multitude of people "from every nation, tribe, people and language." It was a number greater than anyone could imagine.

Revelation is a book which is very difficult for the vast majority of Christians of our time to interpret for the simple reason that they are not a persecuted minority. Rather, in most of the Western world they are a majority although fragmented into with various groups with rivalries and different trends. Some of these groups consider themselves to be the true Christians and do not recognize the legitimacy of the others. Others are more tolerant, but they do not commune with others. The Book of Revelation does not address the reality of present day Christianity.

Christianity today has more in common with the ancient Roman Empire than with the faithful persecuted Christians of the early centuries of the Christian era. Today "Christian nations” wage war against other “Christian nations” as well as against non-Christian.

In the absence of persecution, many use the Book of Revelation as a weapon of attack against each other. They try to identify the "beast", the "antichrist" and the "false prophets" and make mutual accusations. They also try to use it to plot future events is used to try to manipulate their followers into following their doctrinal line or religious practices.

Even though we have achieved sophisticated technologies, our world is beyond our control. We have created "monsters" that can crush us. Our violence is turning against us. Mother Earth is reacting with environmental changes that are producing droughts, floods, heat and cold waves and the rising of the oceans.

What would be the message of this book for a dominant, fragmented and biased Christianity which itself is often a persecutor and to make it faithful to what Jesus taught? The symbolism of “palm branches in their hands” represents peace. It would mean the rejection of violence, prejudice and materialism and replace it by trust in the power of love by peaceful living. Only then can we sow peace, even though it endangers our own lives in the process. Divine action is much greater than we can imagine. It is not for us to be judges and take justice into our own hands. It would be by living justice and relying on the "Lamb" who really reigns despite appearances to the contrary. In that way we can belong to the hidden crowd who has “palm branches in their hands” and are sowers of peace.

THE GREAT MULTITUDE IN WHITE ROBES

After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice:

“Salvation belongs to our God,

who sits on the throne,

and to the Lamb.”

All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying:

“Amen!

Praise and glory

and wisdom and thanks and honor

and power and strength

be to our God for ever and ever.

Amen!”

Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes—who are they, and where did they come from?”

I answered, “Sir, you know.”

And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore,

“they are before the throne of God

    and serve him day and night in his temple;

and he who sits on the throne

    will shelter them with his presence.

‘Never again will they hunger;

    never again will they thirst.

The sun will not beat down on them,’

    nor any scorching heat.

For the Lamb at the center of the throne

    will be their shepherd;

‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’

    ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’

CHEGANDO AOS 88 ANOS

Se a vida permitir, no dia 2 de maio estarei completando 88 anos como ser humano vivendo na face da Terra. Eu nasci em na zona rural na mesma casa onde minha mãe também nasceu localizada em uma pequena fazenda perto da aldeia de Tippecanoe, em Ohio. Não havia eletricidade, água encanada, sistema de aquecimento central, automóvel ou telefone. Havia uma privada externa usada mesmo até nos dias de temperatura bem abaixo de zero. A vida era simples e nos mantivemos com a lavoura tocada pela tração animal e a força muscular humana. Vivíamos uma vida simples e feliz. Éramos pobres, mas não sabia.

Nosso mundo era pequeno, com apenas dois bilhões de habitantes no planeta, a maioria rural como nós. A Primeira Guerra Mundial era apenas uma lembrança. Nós sentíamos seguros, não precisávamos trancar as portas da casa, não havia crime, e conhecíamos todos os nossos vizinhos por quilômetros de distancia.

Nosso Deus era aquele cara acima das nuvens que nos observava. Se não nos comportássemos Ele poderia ficar de “saco cheio” e nos punir, e se não nos "convertermos" iríamos para o inferno. Acabei "me convertendo" e mais tarde fui para a faculdade para me preparar para me tornar um pregador.

Nossa!!! Como os tempos mudaram!!! Agora o planeta está se arrebentando com uma população de mais de sete bilhões de almas, a maioria urbana, como eu agora sou. O mundo está sendo devastado cada vez mais por violentos conflitos armados que estão aumentando todas as formas de sofrimento e que qualquer momento poderia estourar e destruir em poucas horas todas as maiores formas de vida que conhecemos. Nosso sistema econômico está devastando a Terra pela poluição e pela destruição da biodiversidade que é a chave para um ambiente saudável. Vivemos atrás de portas trancadas. A maioria é consumidor, não produtor.

Minha compreensão da realidade se aprofundou ao longo dos anos, e ajustei meu sistema de crenças de acordo com os conhecimentos atuais. A ortodoxia antiga tornou-se irrelevante para o mundo moderno e precisava ser atualizada para ser relevante na atual tendência global da humanidade que caminha para a autodestruição.

O conceito antigo do céu e a terra era que a Terra era o centro de tudo e que todos os objetos celestiais giravam em torno dela. Foi criado por volta do ano 4.000 AC e governado por um Deus masculino e caprichoso. Agora sabemos que o universo é bilhões de vezes maior e bilhões de anos mais velho que os fundadores das religiões monoteístas acreditavam. A pesquisa científica está apontando na direção de que este vasto universo conhecido é apenas um pequeno bolso em um multiverso infinito e eterno. Definir Deus como criador não cabe neste contexto de um multiverso infinito que não foi criado, mas que sempre existiu. A teologia cristã precisa sair da idade das trevas e repensar seu conceito de Deus.

AGORA CREIO QUE:

• Deus é a Consciência Cósmica e o universo é o seu corpo. Sendo o corpo de Deus, o universo é um organismo vivo.
• Somos unidos com Deus como membros do seu corpo juntos com todas as outras formas biológicas, todos os planetas, todas as estrelas, todas as galáxias e toda a existência.
• A morte é a transformação de formas de vida. A vida e a morte são duas faces da mesma moeda. Uma não existe sem a outra. Uma alimenta a outra.
• O bem é o nosso reconhecimento da nossa irmandade com todo o universo e a nossa convivência positiva com ele. É o exercício do amor em todos os relacionamentos. Os evangelhos constam Jesus como um exemplo deste estilo de vida.
• O mal é acharmos que somos pessoas separadas e superiores aos demais e tentarmos dominar o universo para nossa vantagem. É vivermos motivados pelo egoísmo, ganância, medo e ódio.
• A espiritualidade sadia é cultivar espíritos e mentes abertos para poder se desenvolver em direção à vida e viver em harmonia com o universo que é o corpo de Deus.

Com a idade de 88 anos eu procuro seguir o modelo de Jesus como apresentado nos Evangelhos no meu relacionamento com os seres humanos próximos e distantes. Também me esforço para viver um estilo de vida que respeite toda a natureza que me rodeia. Faço meditação a fim de ganhar força e perspicácia para viver melhor em harmonia comigo mesmo e com o meu mundo.

Neste mundo em caos e crises constantes, eu sou grato pela minha família e pelos amigos, grato por todo o bem que me rodeia e procuro cultivar a paz.

APPROACHING MY 88th BIRTHDAY

If life permits, on May 2^nd I will be completing 88 years as a human being on Earth. I was born in a farmhouse where my mother was also born on a small farm near the village of Tippecanoe in Ohio. We had no electricity, no running water, no central heating system, no automobile, no telephone, and an outhouse which greeted our bottoms in subzero weather. Life was simple and we maintained ourselves by sustenance farming, powered by animal traction and our muscles. We lived a simple, happy life. We were poor but did not know it.

Our world was small and the planet had only two billion inhabitants, mostly rural just like us. World War I was only a memory. We felt safe with no need to lock doors, no crime, and knowing all our neighbors for miles around.

Our God was that guy up above the clouds who kept an eye on us. If we didn´t behave He might get pissed off and zap us, and if we didn’t get “saved” we would go to hell. I ended up “getting saved” and went off to college later on to prepare myself to become a preacher.

My, how times have changed!!! Now the world is bursting at the seams with a population of over seven billion souls, mostly urban, as I now am. The world is ravaged by ever increasingly violent armed conflicts which are increasing all forms of suffering and which could explode and destroy all of life as we know it in only a few hours. Our economic system is devastating the Earth by pollution and the destruction of the biodiversity which is the key to a healthy and wholesome environment. We live behind locked doors, and everything that we eat, wear and use is “store bought”.

My understanding of reality has deepened throughout the years, and I have adjusted my belief system in accordance with present knowledge. Ancient orthodoxy has become irrelevant to the modern world and needs to be updated in order to reverse the present global trend of humankind to self-destruction.

The ancient concept of the heavens and the earth was that Earth was the center of everything and that all the heavenly bodies orbited around it. It was created by God about the year 4,000BC and ruled over by Him. Today we know that the universe is billions of times larger and billions of years older than the founders of the monotheistic religions believed. Scientific research is pointing in the direction that this vast known universe is only a small pocket in an infinite and eternal multiverse. Defining God as Creator does not fit in this context of an infinite multiverse which was not created but has always existed. Christian theology needs to come out of the dark ages and rethink God.

I NOW BELIEVE THAT:

• GOD is Cosmic Consciousness and that the universe is her/his body. By being the body of God, the universe is a living organism.

• WE are united with God as members of her/his body along with all other biological forms, all planets, all stars, all galaxies and all existence.

• DEATH is the transformation of life forms. Life and death are two sides of the same coin. One does not exist without the other. One feeds the other.

• GOODNESS is our recognition of our kinship with the whole universe and our positive coexistence with it. We practice goodness when we exercise love in all relationships, both human and ecological. The Gospels present Jesus as an example of this way of life.

• EVIL is to think that we, as humans, are separate from and superior to other beings and forms of life and to try to dominate the earth to our advantage. Evil is to live motivated by selfishness, greed, fear and hate.

• HEALTHY SPIRITUALITY is to cultivate an open mind in order to be able to enhance life by living in harmony with the universe which is the body of God.

At the age of 88 I seek to follow the role model of Jesus as presented in the Gospels in my relationship to fellow humans both nearby and far away. Also I strive to live a lifestyle that respects all of nature that surrounds me. I meditate in order to gain strength and insight to better live in harmony with myself and my world.

In the midst of a chaotic and troubled world I am thankful for my family and friends, grateful for all the good that surrounds me and endeavor to cultivate peace.

CÉSAR E O CORDEIRO

Então ouvi todas as criaturas que há
no céu, na terra, debaixo da terra e no mar,
isto é, todas as criaturas do Universo,
que cantavam:
"Ao que está sentado no trono e ao Cordeiro
sejam dados o louvor, a honra, a glória
e o poder para todo o sempre!"

Apocalipse 5.13 (leia 5.11-14) – NTLH

O Livro do Apocalipse reflete a visão cósmica da antiguidade. O universo era visto como criado em camadas. A terra ficava no meio. Os níveis abaixo da terra eram das trevas e ocupados pelos mortos, demônios e as forças do mal. Acima da terra ficavam os céus, morada dos deuses e os demais seres celestiais. Para os cristãos, acima das nuvens reinavam Deus: junto com Cristo (O Cordeiro), cercados pela corte celestial dos santos, anjos e outras criaturas celestiais. A simbologia do Apocalipse está apoiada neste modelo.

Com a invenção do telescópio e outros instrumentos de pesquisas, este modelo “caiu por terra”. No conceito atual, não existem “acima” e “abaixo” em relação à terra. A terra é uma esfera se movimentando em volta do sol, girando dentro de uma galáxia de bilhões de outros sistemas solares que está se afastando de bilhões de outras galáxias. Se Jesus tivesse “subido ao céu” no meio do século I, à velocidade da luz, ainda estaria dentro da nossa pequena galáxia!...

Mas a visão cósmica, adotada pelos escritores antigos, agora ultrapassada, nada tira do sentido profundo das escrituras. A Bíblia não é uma coleção de pesquisas da história, da geografia, da astronomia ou da física. Não retrata o mundo físico. Descreve a alma humana e seu relacionamento com seu mundo visível e invisível. Lida com realidades espirituais.

O autor do Apocalipse olhava com os olhos da fé, relatando o que enxergava. Conseguiu ver as tragédias do seu dia a dia no contexto maior.

O aparelho do Império Romano exigia dos cidadãos o reconhecimento que César era uma divindade, merecedor de culto. A recusa dos cristãos de confessá-lo como Senhor era interpretada como ato de rebeldia e ateísmo. O castigo era a morte.

A visão do Apocalipse declarou o inverso: “Jesus é Senhor”. César era o anticristo e os que o apoiavam eram profetas falsos. Era uma chamada para escolher entre dois senhores: César ou Cristo. Jesus, identificado como O Cordeiro, venceu a morte e tinha poder de devolver vida aos que foram martirizados em seu nome. Apesar das aparências ao contrário, todas as forças do universo estavam com O Cordeiro.

César foi engolido pela história. Sumiu! No decorrer da história apareceram muitos sucessores de César que reinaram por algum tempo, e depois, caíram. O sucessor de César, vivo e atuante hoje, chama-se “Lucro”. Seu estado é a “Globalização”, seus catedrais são os suntuosos “Shoppings”, seus profetas, as agências de publicidade, seus evangelistas, os garotos e garotas de propaganda!... A salvação consiste em “ter” prestígio e bens. Quem não dobrar seus joelhos ao materialismo corre o perigo de viver no inferno da marginalização. Quem busca o “deus Lucro” tem maior possibilidade de viver no paraíso de muitos bens de consumo. Chega acreditar que a riqueza é sinal da graça divina! Se tiver fé, prosperará!...

O Apocalipse aponta que acima de todos os poderes visíveis, existe o “Invisível” que é digno do nosso louvor. O paraíso verdadeiro consiste em estar ao lado do “Cordeiro” que representa valores não passageiros.

APOCALIPSE 5.11-14 – NOVA TRADUҪÃO NA LINGUAGEM DE HOJE 2000 (NTLH)

Olhei outra vez e ouvi muitos anjos, milhões e milhões deles! Estavam de pé em volta do trono, dos quatro seres vivos e dos líderes e cantavam com voz forte:

“O Cordeiro que foi morto

    é digno de receber poder,

riqueza, sabedoria e força,

    honra, glória e louvor.”

Então ouvi todas as criaturas que há no céu, na terra, debaixo da terra e no mar, isto é, todas as criaturas do Universo, que cantavam:

“Ao que está sentado no trono

    e ao Cordeiro

pertencem o louvor, a honra, a glória

    e o poder para todo o sempre!”

Os quatro seres respondiam: “Amém!” E os líderes caíram de joelhos e o adoraram.

CAESAR AND THE LAMB

Then I heard every creature
in heaven and on earth
and under the earth
and on the sea,
and all that is in them, saying:
“To him who sits on the throne
and to the Lamb
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”

Revelation 5:13 (read 5.11-14) - NIV

The Book of Revelation reflects the cosmic vision of antiquity. The universe was seen as being created in layers. The land was in the middle. The levels below the earth were the realms of darkness and occupied by the dead, the demons and all the forces of evil. Above the Earth stretched the firmament which separated the waters below from the waters above. Below the firmament were the sun, moon and stars. Above the waters of the firmament were the heavens, home of the gods and the other heavenly beings. For Christians, God reigned up there above it all along with Christ (the Lamb), surrounded by the heavenly court of saints, angels and other heavenly creatures. The symbolism of Revelation is based on this model.

With the invention of the telescope and other research tools, this model has fallen apart. In the current concept there is no "above" or "below" the earth. The earth is a sphere moving around the sun, turning within a galaxy of billions of other solar systems. Our galaxy is only one of billions of other galaxies. If Jesus had "gone up into heaven" in the middle of the first century at the speed of light he would still be within our small galaxy.

But the cosmic vision, adopted by the ancient writers, now outdated, takes nothing from the deep meaning of the scriptures. The Bible is not a collection of objective facts of history, geography, astronomy or physics. It does not portray the physical world in an objective way. It describes the human soul and its relationship with the visible and invisible worlds in symbolic language. It deals with spiritual realities.

The author of Revelation was looking through the eyes of faith and reporting what he saw. He could see the tragedies of his times in a larger context.

The rulers of the Roman Empire required its citizens to recognize that Caesar was a deity worthy of worship. The refusal of Christians to confess him as Lord was interpreted as an act of rebellion and atheism. The punishment was often death.

The vision of the Book of Revelation stated the exact opposite – "Jesus is Lord." Caesar was seen as the antichrist and his supporters were false prophets. The call was to choose between two masters: Caesar or Christ. Jesus was identified as the Lamb who conquered death and had power to give back life to those who were martyred on his behalf. Despite appearances to the contrary, all the forces of the universe were with the Lamb.

Caesar was swallowed by history. He is gone! But throughout history there have appeared many successors of Caesar who ruled for a while, and then also disappeared. The successor of Caesar today, is called "Profit". His state is a military/industrial complex called "Globalization" with hundreds of military bases around the world to enforce it. Its cathedrals are sumptuous "malls". Its ministers are the sales people and its evangelists are the advertising agencies. Salvation is acquired through buying and heaven is the possession of prestige and property. Whoever does not bend his or her knees to materialism is in danger of marginalization and living in the hell of poverty and imprisonment. Wealth is considered to be a sign of divine grace. If you have faith you prosper!!!

The Book of Revelation points out that above all these visible powers, there is the "Invisible" One that is worthy of our praise. Genuine paradise is to be next to the "Lamb" who represents values that will never end. Our temptations are more subtle but just as dangerous as those of the early Christians. Today it is through a life of simplicity and compassion that we can praise, honor and glorify the “Lamb”.

REVELATION 5:11-14 – NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (NIV)

Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they were saying:

“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,

    to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength

    and honor and glory and praise!”

Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb

    be praise and honor and glory and power,

for ever and ever!”

The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped.

ESTÁ PERTO O TEMPO

Feliz quem lê este livro,
e felizes aqueles que ouvem as palavras
desta mensagem profética
e obedecem ao que está escrito neste livro!
Pois está perto o tempo
em que todas essas coisas acontecerão.

Apocalipse 1.3 (leia 1.3-8) – NTLH

O livro do Apocalipse foi escrito no século II para um povo específico, tratando duma realidade específica. Esquecer estes fatos pode levar às interpretações absurdas! É livro alegórico, escrito para pessoas vivendo fora da lei, condenadas à morte por seguirem uma religião proibida. Eram sujeitas à prisão, tortura e morte toda hora. Precisavam de uma mensagem para conviver com o perigo constante.

Foi escrito numa linguagem que seria entendida pelos perseguidos. Para os que têm um cristianismo confortável, é difícil entender o Apocalipse. Torna-se um livro especulativo para descobrir o que vai acontecer na história, quem é a besta, o anticristo, etc. Mas para os perseguidos, sua mensagem é clara: há um poder acima dos poderes visíveis, intolerantes e aparentemente invencíveis que dominavam na época. Estes poderes são condenados a cair. A vitória final é dos perseguidos, não dos perseguidores. Jesus é o supremo exemplo: foi perseguido e morto, mas agora está na glória! A esperança dos perseguidos é que, mesmo morrendo por causa da fé, a vitória final será deles. A morte será transformada em vida, o caos em paraíso!

Há um sentido em que a frase, “está perto o tempo”, é um estado permanente. O conflito entre perseguidores intolerantes e perseguidos é uma constante na história humana. Só muda o nome das personagens. Também, há troca de papéis, perseguidos virando perseguidores.

O Apocalipse é o livro dos perseguidos de todas as épocas. Enquanto há perseguição, “está perto o tempo” da queda dos poderosos. Não trata de uma única sequência de eventos históricos. Até agora, nenhuma interpretação histórica se cumpriu. O livro relata realidades cósmicas, válidas para todas as épocas.

Primeira mensagem: existe um poder acima dos poderes temporais. Temporal quer dizer “passageiro”, não permanente. Estes poderes terão fim. Eles agem contra a “força maior”, são destinados ao fracasso. Sua supremacia é apenas aparente.

Segunda mensagem: vale a pena manter a fé diante do perigo! A fé é a habilidade de olhar além das aparências e enxergar a realidade maior. Os poderes transitórios podem abater o corpo, mas não o espírito. O espírito pode ser imbatível.

Qual é a mensagem para nós? Não somos ameaçados à morte por causa da fé. Não representamos ameaça para ninguém. Estamos sendo seduzidos com um encanto suave que leva à morte. É a atração do materialismo, prometendo prosperidade. Cria elitismo espiritual, social e econômico. Incentiva a ganância, corrupção, ódio, preconceito e violência que produzem as nossas realidades assustadoras. Sendo cientes destas realidades, podemos resistir suas tentações, lembrando que o caminho de Jesus é a solidariedade que pode levar à cruz.. Viver somente para si é negar os valores da fé. Mesmo, sem perseguição, está perto o tempo.

SAUDAÇÃO ÀS SETE IGREJAS

Eu, João, escrevo às sete igrejas que estão na província da Ásia.

Que a graça e a paz lhes sejam dadas da parte de Deus, aquele que é, que era e que há de vir; da parte dos sete espíritos que estão diante do seu trono e da parte de Jesus Cristo, a testemunha fiel! Ele é o primeiro Filho, que foi ressuscitado e que governa os reis do mundo inteiro.

Ele nos ama, e pela sua morte na cruz nos livrou dos nossos pecados, e fez de nós um reino de sacerdotes a fim de servirmos ao seu Deus e Pai. A Jesus Cristo sejam dados a glória e o poder para todo o sempre! Amém!

Olhem! Ele vem com as nuvens! Todos o verão, até mesmo os que o atravessaram com a lança. Todos os povos do mundo chorarão por causa dele. Certamente será assim. Amém!
