ALREADY RESURRECTED

Since…you have been raised with Christ,
set your hearts on things above,
where Christ is,
seated at the right hand of God.
Set your minds on things above,
not on earthly things.

Colossians 3:1-2 (read 3:1-4) - NIV

We usually think of the resurrection as something that happened in the remote past (Jesus arose) or as a faraway future hope in the end times when everybody will be resurrected. But in this text Paul treats the theme of our resurrection as of something that is a present reality which has already happened – “you have been raised with Christ”. The fact that we have already been raised with Christ should have profound implications for our daily lives.

Biblical language is poetic, symbolic and mystical. It is spirit, not science – symbolic, not literal. It is impossible to understand it literally. The figures that are used represent realities beyond themselves. Where Christ is seated next to God is not a literal point in space. Heaven is an inner reality, not a physically located place. The “things above" and the “earthly things" do not refer to objects that are physically located. Both: The “things above" and the “earthly things" are values, not objects.

If we have already been raised with Christ, our interests should now be directed toward another system of values. "Earthly things" represent our materialistic immediatism which gives us personal and physical gratification in the here and now. “From above” represents the long term values which promote collective wellbeing but do not always produce immediate results. The resurrection takes us from the tyranny of selfish immediatism and places us as citizens of the universe and of the Kingdom of God which is selfless and all inclusive. We are not isolated individuals, each one taking care only of himself or herself at the cost of others.

In our culture, the highest values are material. Human beings are valued according to the amount of wealth they possess. Profit is the god of materialism. The malls are our temples, the clerks are our priests and the advertisers are our evangelists. Eternal happiness is achieved through purchases. The accumulation of material wealth and power is heaven. Earthly heaven exalts sumptuous buildings, great monuments, flashy designs, powerful war machines and everything related to wealth, power, and status.

The churches, too, are tempted to enter into the dance of materialism. They feel pressure to show their greatness through magnificent buildings and play up statistics to show their achievements. The success of pastors is measured by financial and membership growth statistics instead of a positive impact on the quality of life of the members and of its surrounding community. Not to reach budget targets is worse than not reaching out to the needy. The prosperity of the churches is measured by their internal activities rather than their social engagement in their local communities. When I started out as a pastor my first church supervisor once counseled me to not forget that the two most important books of the Bible are Numbers and Acts if I were to be a successful pastor.

Being “raised with Christ” leads us to the dimensions of a "glory" that cannot be measured statistically. It takes us beyond the limits of: sectarianism, patriotism, legalism, petty biases, classism and racism. It unites us with all of humanity and connects us with the whole of creation. It has nothing to do with doctrines, dogmas and creeds but everything to do with living a life of unconditional love toward others in this world that is perishing because of the lack of love.

COLOSSIANS 3:1-4 – NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (NIV)

LIVING AS THOSE MADE ALIVE IN CHRIST

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

A nossa tendência é fugir deste modelo. A essência é a mesma.

Agia, livre, no mundo... É viver a fé no mundo.

Filipe disse a Jesus:

Quem me vê vê também o Pai.

Jesus continuou:

Jesus respondeu:

— A pessoa que me ama obedecerá à minha mensagem, e o meu Pai a amará.

THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH

Very truly I tell you,
whoever believes in me
will do the works I have been doing,
and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
And I will ask the Father,
and he will give you another advocate
to help you and be with you forever
— THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH.
The world cannot accept him,
because it neither sees him nor knows him.
But you know him,
for he lives with you and will be in you.

John 14:12,16-17 (read 14:8-27) - NIV

The Spirit of Pentecost is the Spirit of Truth. It is the continuous presence of Jesus in his followers for all times. The Spirit saturates his works and his teachings. In this sense, Jesus is not limited to being a single individual, but his presence would be multiplied by his presence and actions wherever his followers are to be found. Every Christian should be a "Jesus", continuing his works and spreading his teachings.

Jesus acted within the context of his society but independent of religious structures. His church was not closed within the four walls of some sanctuary. It was not an organized power structure with authority from top to bottom. For Jesus, truth was not a set of beliefs that others should accept in order to be saved. It was coexistence with all of humanity and communion with the "Sacred" that resides in others and frees them from the oppressive powers of materialism, personal ambition, prejudice and disease.

Our tendency is to flee from this model. The institutional church that we know it today is the opposite of what Jesus lived and taught. It became the reproduction of Judaism but called itself by another name and with similar sets of dogmas and norms of behavior. The essence did not change. It is easier to institutionalize Jesus by making him into a "figure head" of the church. That leaves us free to hide within an institution which administrates salvation and isolates us from the "common people".

Are we a missionary community in the service of the people? Or are we a community that serves ourselves? By staying within the church we avoid engaging directly with the suffering and the fate of most of humanity.

Imagine what it would be like if every Christian became a "Jesus" released into the world! It would be revolutionary for every believer to try to be a friend of sinners instead being like that boring and moralistic guy with a “holier than thou” attitude and trying to manipulate others. In Brazil it would be hard to imagine a “Christian samba school” in a carnival parade celebrating God's creation and the beauty of nature. We consider it to be “spiritual” to isolate ourselves in spiritual retreats or to distribute evangelistic tracts for those who are enjoying and celebrating life, despite the suffering and injustice that exist around them.

Upon receiving the Spirit in baptism, Jesus did not deny his Jewish origins but did not allow himself be bound by them. He acted as a free agent in the world. The followers of Jesus upon receiving the Holy Spirit at Pentecost remained Jews, but they exceeded the limits that that tradition placed on them. To act in the power of the Spirit of Truth does not imply a change of religion. It means "power" to break the institutional barriers of religions. The work of Jesus, yesterday and today, is not to promote the church or religion. It is to live out our faith in the world. The Spirit of Truth gives us the faith and the power to get "off the institutional boat" and ride on top of “stormy waves" in today’s world. The Spirit of Truth has little to do with religion but everything to do with how we live in the world.

JOHN 14:8-27 – NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (NIV)

Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

JESUS PROMISES THE HOLY SPIRIT

“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”

Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

“All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

A GLÓRIA VERDADEIRA

O ideal é a prosperidade e o poder.

Cacá Diegues levou a tela o Deus brasileiro.

A glória do evangelho é o milagre do amor.

todas as criaturas no céu,

    caiam de joelhos

e declarem abertamente

que Jesus Cristo é o Senhor,

TRUE GLORY

In your relationships with one another,
have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God
something to be
used to his own advantage;
rather,
he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness..

Philippians 2:5-7 (read 2:5-11) - NIV

What was the "mindset” of Jesus? It was an unassuming humility. In a consumer society that is difficult. We are taught to look not only at "our own navel" but also to desire things. A person is considered to be a failure if he or she isn’t able to better himself or herself in life. Our idea of success is based on prosperity and power. Whoever cannot reach them becomes a second-class citizen, living on the margin of society, depending on subsidies and being accused of being lazy by the religious right.

If Jesus came again as he was reported to have done 2,000 years ago, what would be his lifestyle today? Could we imagine a black American Jesus? Let's imagine his birth taking place in a slum of Detroit to a poor girl who got married in a hurry, because she discovered that she was pregnant. Who would believe that she was a virgin? Her daddy, being a religious man, forced her boyfriend into a shotgun wedding. Jesus would be malnourished, dark skinned and badly dressed. He would follow his family’s religious tradition to a certain point, but would be indifferent to many of its practices and customs. He would be looked down on by the moralists as being suspect, because he associated with the wrong crowd: girls with loose morals, drinkers, addicts, poor, gay and AIDS victims and would disturb those who profit on the human misery. The fact that Jesus held no job and was beginning to attract people through his kindness and his criticism of the social order turned him into a threat to society. The authorities would get rid of him through violence.

Our image of Jesus as a tall, blond, blue-eyed, clean, sweet smelling patriotic American has nothing to do with the historical Jesus. He probably was short, brown, smelly and unkempt. There was nothing romantic in his appearance. His compassion and human solidarity made him stand out. His beauty and glory was his presence with those whom society had abandoned.

The recommendation of the Apostle Paul in the above text, "In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus" is frightening. Are we ready for this? Are we ready to rethink our Protestant or Catholic mindsets?

Do we have the courage to leave the security of our closed system of pietism and our isolation from the world? Do we really want the glory of Christ? Do we have enough faith to practice the mindset of Jesus? Do ornate temples and large concentrations of selected Christians for their own spiritual growth reflect the gospel that Jesus lived? Is our church structure with the privileges and status that it confers an elite minority in accordance with the humility of Jesus?

Some think that it would be a blessing to the Gospel if all temples were destroyed or turned into cultural museums and Christianity banned. Christians would then be forced to live their faith with courage and humility. The glory of the gospel is the miracle of love. Our challenge: to love as Jesus loved. God will do the exalting.

PHILIPPIANS 2:5-11 – NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (NIV)

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

Who, being in very nature[a] God,

    did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;

rather, he made himself nothing

by taking the very nature[b] of a servant,

    being made in human likeness.

And being found in appearance as a man,

    he humbled himself

    by becoming obedient to death—

        even death on a cross!

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place

and gave him the name that is above every name,

that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father

POVO DA VERDADE

Pois nós não estamos lutando contra seres humanos,
mas contra as forças espirituais do mal
que vivem nas alturas,
isto é,
os governos, as autoridades e os poderes
que dominam completamente este mundo de escuridão
.

Qualquer força controladora é manifestação do mal.

A nossa resposta é a verdade. A vida é graça.

Respeitou a integridade do próximo.

A ARMADURA DO CRISTÃO

Façam tudo isso orando a Deus e pedindo a ajuda dele. Orem sempre, guiados pelo Espírito de Deus. Fiquem alertas.

TRUTH PEOPLE

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood,
but against the rulers,
against the authorities,
against the powers of this dark world
and against the spiritual forces of evil
in the heavenly realms..

Ephesians 6:12 (read 6.10-20) NIV

The author of the Letter to the Ephesians is very lucid in his analysis of his time. Little has changed! It’s still true. It looks like it was written this morning. The evils of that time were spiritual and demanded answers on the same level. In this text we have a list of items to be used against the anti-life forces. In this list we can identify the malicious elements:

LIFE
ANTI-LIFE
truth
falsehood
justice
injustice
peace
violence
faith
distrust
salvation
destruction
word
chaos

What is evil? The essence of evil is falsehood, which begins with self-deception. It is the absolute refusal to recognize one’s own evil. Instead of correcting the evil that is in ourselves we project it onto others and attack them. We take the law into our own hands and commit injustice. One of the features of evil people is that their use of power is to control others. This can be done psychologically, economically or physically by the use of violence. Evil is present in both the religious and the secular worlds. Any controlling force is a manifestation of evil independent of its motives. Power in itself is evil.

In looking at the world today we can see that falsehood dominates all areas: private and public life at both local and international levels in politics, trade, industry and communications. Humanity has six millennia of recorded history, full of violence of all kinds. To date the use of force has never established a social order of justice. Evil has never been eliminated by force. Force that is used against evil becomes evil.

The ends do not justify the means. We end up getting caught in the incoherency of “we kill people who kill people, because killing people is wrong”. By the use of force we become oppressors and poison our own soul. Worse yet, with our limited judgements, we will also drag innocent people down with us.

If evil is basically falsehood enforced by violence, the alternative is truth promoted by peace. What is truth? Truth is not a set of objective facts or a correct system of thought. It is the awareness that all existence, of which we are part, is a gift, independent of merit. Life is grace. We do not own anything and we are not superior to our social and ecological environment. This awareness leads to humility.

Truth frees us from falsehood. The Gospels present Jesus as the embodiment of truth. Even in being the "Son of God" he did not invade the lives of others in order to impose his values. He respected the integrity of others. Instead of being imposing he was sympathetic to the victims of falsehood. It was falsehood that took him to the cross, but it was truth that triumphed over death.

To impose our values from a position of power is easier than to live the truth and be subject to the cross. It requires faith, but the world is desperately in need of PEOPLE OF TRUTH.

EPHESIANS 6:10-20 – NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (NIV)

THE ARMOR OF GOD

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of justice in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

PARAÍSO PERDIDO

E todos continuavam firmes,
seguindo os ensinamentos dos apóstolos,
vivendo em amor cristão,
partindo o pão juntos e fazendo orações.
Atos 2.42 – (leia 2.42-47) – NTLH

A humildade faz parte do amor.

PARADISE LOST

They devoted themselves
to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship,
to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

Acts 2:42 (read 2:42-47) – NIV

The Book of Genesis in the Old Testament portrays the beginning of mankind in a paradise which is described as the Garden of Eden. Everything was perfect: no death, no pain, no sweat, no toil, no cold that needed a blanket and every afternoon there was a walk in the garden with the Creator. There was no hunger, no tiredness, no sadness or disharmony. Everything was the opposite of what came later and still prevails today. All efforts to recreate havens have been frustrated throughout history. The "heavens" always morph into "hells".

The Book of Acts in the New Testament portrays also a “Garden of Eden” which was the Church where brothers and sisters lived together in solidarity by pooling all of their assets. They ate together in their homes with joy and humility. Nobody suffered privation. They praised God for everything. The fraternal life was so admired by the general public that many people flocked to the community of believers.

Just as in the paradise of Genesis, that paradisiacal church had a short life and disappeared forever. All attempts to restore it have been frustrated by the creation of new divisions and ever drifting further and further away from this ideal. Honesty leads us to affirm that the churches that exist today are the opposite of that which was first recorded in the Acts of the Apostles. In the church of today there are pride, rivalry, competition, rejection, disunity, indifference, suspicion and opportunism which accompany the good that it is able to do.

Our challenge today is to live the Kingdom of God where selfishness reigns in its various forms and even disguises itself as a form of piety.

The intended purpose of all institutions is to enhance the well-being of humanity. But at the same time all institutions, including both religious and charitable, offer perfect stages for self-promotion. There is always great quest after the “highest” positions, whether in a political party or a counsel of bishops in a church. Positions that offer the most advantages are the most sought after. I've never seen people quarrel over the privilege of cleaning bathrooms, but I am tired of seeing fierce competition for high positions in the church. Even in the church, it is an honor to be in first place and humiliating to be the least. The bishop is mightier than the janitor. The church has the privilege of hearing the words of Jesus: "The last shall be first and the last shall be first", but those words don’t seem to soak in. With this dispute for advantages even churches, become anti-Kingdom.

Our text shows that the key to how to live the Kingdom in any environment is "solidarity" (They had everything in common.). Solidarity is the spirit of sharing with others according to their needs. Living at the expense of others would be the opposite. Humility is also a part of solidarity. Thinking that we are better than others and that God is on our side more than on their side is also anti-Kingdom. Christians are champions in condemning other religions, believing that only they are right.

Joy is also the fruit of solidarity and is contagious. It shows that we can overcome the difficulties that appear along the way. Praise is a form of joy that comes from the recognition that God is gracious and blesses us beyond our merits. These qualities can show that the Kingdom of God is hope and can transform us into salt and light.

ACTS 2:42-47 – NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (NIV)

THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE BELIEVERS

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
