PAIXÃO

Venha então, minha querida;
venha comigo, meu amor.
O inverno já foi,
a chuva passou,
e as flores aparecem nos campos.
É tempo de cantar!
Venha comigo, minha querida.

A nudez é tabu.

Chegou a Primavera! O Inverno passou! A cantada e a sedução fazem parte do amor.

Ela:
Estou ouvindo a voz do meu amor.
Ele vem depressa, descendo as montanhas,
correndo pelos montes.
O meu amado é como uma gazela;
Ele está olhando para dentro, pelas janelas;
está me espiando pelas grades.
O meu amor está falando comigo.

Ele:
Venha então, minha querida;
venha comigo, meu amor.
O inverno já foi, a chuva passou,
e as flores aparecem nos campos.
É tempo de cantar;
Venha comigo, minha querida.

PASSION

My beloved spoke and said to me,
“Arise, my darling,
my beautiful one, come with me.
See! The winter is past;
the rains are over and gone.
Flowers appear on the earth;
the season of singing has come,
Arise, come, my darling;
my beautiful one, come with me.”
Song of Songs 2:10-12a, 13b (read 2:8-13) NIV

Erotic love is part of life. Song of Songs of the Old Testament is among the world's most erotic literature! It's a song extolling the pleasures of physical love. It records the dialogue between two lovers surrendering themselves to each another! The translation cannot convey to our cultural the wealth of erotic images. In the Hebrew culture the images convey the pleasures of smell, taste, touch and orgasm. It is pure passion without speaking of engagement, wedding, family or children. It is pure ecstasy, without cultural or religious taboos. It is the frenzy of liberation, without neuroses and prejudices.

It is an expression of the counterculture, protesting against the oppression of women and the rejection of the body by a patriarchal culture and religion. The institutional religion treated women as inferior beings. The sexual organs were shameful, reproductive functions impure and the body suspect. The Song of Songs breaks these barriers. Passion is wonderful and can be enjoyed to its fullness!

This book is problematic for churches and often ignored. When timidly mentioned it is watered down and treated as an allegory of the love between God and His People or Christ and the Church. But in this book God is not mentioned even once. Other times it is interpreted as love between husband and wife duly married by Church norms. The churches cannot accept it as it is without disguising it and making it look like something it isn’t.

One of the characteristics of Judaism, Christianity and Islam is the rejection of the human body, especially the female. The body is shameful and should be hidden. Nudity is taboo. Primitive cultures do not have this problem. They accept the body quite naturally. The magazine, Playboy would make no success in Indian tribes. It would be tedious and ho hum. That type of magazine thrives in our culture, because we are neurotic about sex. Our cultural neurosis fuels the pornographic industry, sexual crimes and abuses.

Another aggravating factor in the monotheistic religions is their macho roots. Men have created macho Gods who down women. Men must be in control over women’s bodies. Women have more restrictions imposed on them than men do which produces a double standard of morality in favor of men. That is very evident in the conservative side of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. But in the Song of Songs, both sexes are free to enjoy their sensuality.

Spring has arrived! Winter has passed! Life is sprouting! The plants are waking up and bursting out in bloom. The doves are singing their songs of seduction which is a part of love. The world is full of the beauty of a symphony of colors, sounds, aromas and flavors. It is a time for passion!

Sexual passions are fleeting, but they can lead us to a passion for life and a faith that life is worth it! Life can become charming, even with frustrations and obstacles. Faith can open new and charming worlds with every moment a surprise and each day an adventure. Boredom is the sign of death, passion the sign of life!

Passion drives people to go beyond themselves. It overcomes the limits of logic, faces obstacles and overcomes barriers. Faith and passion are sisters. They see beauty and donate themselves to the beloved. I desire a faith that makes me fall in love with life and all creation with the earth, my dear and the universe, my love.

SONG OF SONGS 2:8-13 – NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (NIV)

Listen! My beloved!
    Look! Here he comes,
leaping across the mountains,
    bounding over the hills.
My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag.
    Look! There he stands behind our wall,
gazing through the windows,
    peering through the lattice.
My beloved spoke and said to me,
    “Arise, my darling,
    my beautiful one, come with me.
See! The winter is past;
    the rains are over and gone.
Flowers appear on the earth;
    the season of singing has come,
the cooing of doves
    is heard in our land.
The fig tree forms its early fruit;
    the blossoming vines spread their fragrance.
Arise, come, my darling;
    my beautiful one, come with me.”

CEGUEIRA E VISÃO

Eu o criei e o enviei...
como a luz da salvação
que darei aos outros povos;

A mente fechada escraviza.

O Senhor Deus criou os céus e os estendeu;
como a luz da salvação que darei aos outros povos;

BLINDNESS AND SIGHT

I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness;
I will take hold of your hand.
I will keep you and will make you
to be a covenant for the people
and a light for the Gentiles,
to open eyes that are blind,
to free captives from prison
and to release from the dungeon
those who sit in darkness.
Isaiah 42:6-7 (read 42.1-7)

Human eyes have been blind to God's will for humanity. The Jews expected the coming of a warrior messiah to put the nation of Israel in the position of supremacy among nations and inspire the world to look to Jerusalem to receive the light of salvation. They are still waiting!

For nearly 2,000 years Christians have awaited the return of a conquering Christ to avenge His enemies and establish His Kingdom of peace on Earth. The wicked are to be condemned to eternal torment in hell and the good rewarded endless paradise. They, too, are still waiting!

Both Jews and Christians rely on divine violence to enforce justice and peace. The Jews rejected Jesus because he was not the mighty conquering liberator messiah. Christians place their ultimate hope in a coming Christ who will be powerful and vindictive instead of vulnerable and peaceful. Through the centuries Christianity has taken up the sword more than the cross. It has had it’s eyes closed to peace as being a way of life.

A careful reading of Isaiah 42.1-7 shows the nature of the person who announces the will of God for all people of the world: "He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.” It is light that will open blind eyes and release the prisoners, from their dark prisons.

The prophet Isaiah indicates that God is pleased with those who do not make a big show or use brute power, but with those who respect the broken and the weak. This sensitivity will open the eyes of the blind and free the oppressed from their prisons.

The "open the eyes" of the blind comes before "set free the prisoners." The worst blindness is "closed eyes." Our tendency is for us to close our eyes to the truths that trouble us. By doing so we are living a lie. Living with closed eyes is living in a "dark prison". Closed eyes create prisons. A closed mind enslaves.

Often evangelization consists of exchanging one prison for another. When we adopt the posture of possessing the whole truth we find ourselves obligated to defend and maintain that truth. In this way our "truth" becomes another dark prison. The new converts are led to close their eyes to everything that is not within the truth that is taught by their new “faith”. Discourse and indoctrination are dangerous, because they can be used to build other prisons. Testimony, not instruction, can lead the blind to open their eyes and get out of one prison without falling into another one.

It is with "open eyes" that deliverance comes. A person who really sees will not submit to oppression. He or she is free to live the truth even when imprisoned. Jesus is the supreme example of this principle. We cannot imagine Jesus being submissive to any human authority. He was free to live the love of the Father, against all religious and social constraints. By preaching submission and conformity, the churches are building "dark prisons".

Justice can be established only by living it, never by imposing it. Neither Christianity nor the Jewish State of Israel has been able to put this text into practice. Thus the world (gentiles) does not look to either the State of Israel or Christianity for light. The countries in which Christianity is a majority are directly involved in and promoting the violence. In promoting violence even Christians become antichrists.

ISAIAH 42:1-7 – NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (NIV)

“Here is my servant, whom I uphold,
    my chosen one in whom I delight;
I will put my Spirit on him,
    and he will bring justice to the nations.
He will not shout or cry out,
    or raise his voice in the streets.
A bruised reed he will not break,
    and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.
In faithfulness he will bring forth justice;
     he will not falter or be discouraged
till he establishes justice on earth.
    In his teaching the islands will put their hope.”
This is what God the Lord says—
the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out,
    who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it,
    who gives breath to its people,
    and life to those who walk on it:
“I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness;
    I will take hold of your hand.
I will keep you and will make you
    to be a covenant for the people
    and a light for the Gentiles,
to open eyes that are blind,
    to free captives from prison

    and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.

MÃE SABEDORIA E DONA LOUCURA

Escutem!

MOTHER WISDOM AND MADAM FOLLY

Out in the open Wisdom calls aloud,
she raises her voice in the public square.
Proverbs 1:20

Folly is an unruly woman;
she is simple and knows nothing.
Proverbs 9:13
(Read Proverbs 1.20-25: 9.13-18 – NIV

Wisdom in the Book of Proverbs is given a feminine personality. Some translators lay hold of the Greek word for "wisdom" and translate it as "Sofia", a proper name. In Proverbs she speaks for herself:

“The Lord brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old; I was formed long ages ago, at the very beginning, when the world came to be. When there were no watery depths, I was given birth, when there were no springs overflowing with water; before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was given birth, before he made the world or its fields or any of the dust of the earth. I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep, when he gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep his command, and when he marked out the foundations of the earth. Then I was constantly at his side. was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence, rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind. (Proverbs 8.22-31).

Mother Wisdom presents herself not as a goddess but as the feminine presence in creation. God was the father and she was the mother, the feminine face of the Creator. She was the architect. Nothing was done without her presence. Her guidance built lives, families, tribes and societies, strong and happy. Those who follow her become sources of life and blessing, strengthening and continuing the work of the Creator. Those who despise her go to destruction, taking others along with them.

But Mother Wisdom has a rival, Madam Folly who is attractive and has a seductive voice. Her speech is contrary to that of Mother Wisdom. "Stolen water is better; stolen bread is tastier" says Madam Folly and justifies her arguments! She says that we live in a cruel world and we do not know about tomorrow. Existence is a struggle for survival for all of us. The smartest take the cake and fools get the leftovers. Happiness is getting your piece at all costs and let others fend for themselves.

Madam Folly is endangering the house that Mother Wisdom built. She no longer sits at the door of her house and calls to those who are passing. She walks the streets, creating visual pollution with posters and billboards, encouraging consumerism and enters into homes and speaks enthusiastically through television sets and the pages of magazines and newspapers. Her message is the attraction of physical beauty and the glory of brand names. She says that happiness is to be elegant and have prestige and wealth. Ethical and moral factors are ignored when convenient. TO HAVE has more value than TO BE. She is saturating our culture.

The compulsion to possess power and things is leading us to the exploitation of each other and all of creation. The followers of the philosophy of Madam Folly are depleting human and natural resources and polluting the soil, air and water. Forests are disappearing from the earth and the fish disappearing from the sea. This house, our home, that Mother Wisdom built, is being demolished before our eyes.

The voice of Mother Wisdom needs to abandon the temples and go to the streets and squares! It needs to go to all places where people gather and to shout loudly denouncing the folly of our materialism and selfishness that is driving the world to destruction. Mother Wisdom has no voice but our voice. Do we have the luxury of silence?

PROVERBS 1:20-25 – NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (NIV)

Out in the open wisdom calls aloud,
    she raises her voice in the public square;
on top of the wall[a] she cries out,
    at the city gate she makes her speech:
“How long will you who are simple love your simple ways?
    How long will mockers delight in mockery
    and fools hate knowledge?
Repent at my rebuke!
    Then I will pour out my thoughts to you,
    I will make known to you my teachings.
But since you refuse to listen when I call
    and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand,
since you disregard all my advice
    and do not accept my rebuke,

PROVERBS 9:13-18 – NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (NIV)

Folly is an unruly woman;
    she is simple and knows nothing.
She sits at the door of her house,
    on a seat at the highest point of the city,
calling out to those who pass by,
    who go straight on their way,
     “Let all who are simple come to my house!”
To those who have no sense she says,
     “Stolen water is sweet;
    food eaten in secret is delicious!”
But little do they know that the dead are there,

    that her guests are deep in the realm of the dead.

VIVER É CAMINHAR

O mar Vermelho olhou e fugiu;
o rio Jordão parou de correr.
As montanhas pularam como carneiros,
e os montes saltaram como carneirinhos.
Pois ele faz com que
as rochas virem fontes
e transforma as pedras
em fontes de água.
Salmo 114.3, 4, 8 – (leia Salmo 114) – NTLH

A vida vence o medo.

SALMOS 114 – NOVA TRADUҪÃO NA LINGUAGEM DE HOJE 2000 (NTLH)

Quando os descendentes de Jacó,
    o povo de Israel,
saíram do Egito, aquela terra estrangeira,
O mar Vermelho olhou e fugiu;
o rio Jordão parou de correr.
As montanhas pularam como carneiros,
e os montes saltaram como carneirinhos.
Que aconteceu, ó mar,
    para que você fugisse assim?
E, você, rio Jordão,
    por que parou de correr?
Ó montanhas, por que vocês pularam
    como carneiros?
Montes, por que vocês saltaram
    como carneirinhos?
Trema, ó terra, na vinda do Senhor,
na presença do Deus de Jacó,
pois ele faz com que as rochas

    virem fontes

TO LIVE IS TO JOURNEY

The sea looked and fled,
the Jordan turned back;
the mountains leaped like rams,
the hills like lambs.
Tremble, earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob,
who turned the rock into a pool,
the hard rock into springs of water.
Psalm 114:3, 4,7, 8 (read Psalm 114) – NIV

This psalm describes in a poetic way what happened when the people Israel left Egypt to go on an impossible journey of that presented great obstacles between them and a "Promised Land".

As we face impasses in life there can be a song of hope for us also. Our logic can look at a situation and say “There is no way through”, but the heart can face the situation hoping for the best. The 114th Psalm cites two impossible situations in the Hebrew tradition: the Red Sea blocking the Exodus from Egypt and the flooded Jordan River that prevented the entry into the Promised Land. To really live is to face the obstacles before us and risk of failure. To die would be to retreat in fear and embrace failure. We can really live only when we face our fears.

The sea that fled and the river that turned back are metaphors that describe the obstacles we encounter along the way. Although huge, they are not invincible. They can be crossed. The leaping mountains and hills represent the vibrant life force that supports us and that makes life worthwhile.

We are People of God to the extent that we move in the direction that makes the creation jump for joy! The Lord's purpose is to help overcome obstacles and seek to bring about changes that turn “rocks into springs of water”. The rich symbolism of this psalm shows a power beyond us as we have courage face obstacles.

Our Egypt is not a geographical state with drawn boundaries, but a social and economic world without clear divisions. It is a system of values and priorities that enslaves us. There is a privileged minority of powerful capitalists, militarists and politicians who live by the exploitation of the majority for personal gain. The supreme value is economic. Earnings and asset accumulation are above the common good. The unbridled exploitation of natural resources is upsetting the ecological system and future generations are threatened. If this keeps up, the human race itself may go into extinction. Our Egypt is the State of Self Destructive Exploitation.

To live is to see beyond the present obstacles and have a vision of how the world could be better, a vision of a "land of promise". It is to engage in activities that promote social, environmental and physical health. It is to be transformed and to act to promote transformation in the world around us.

The head says that all this would be only a drop in the ocean and would make no difference. We would be sacrificing ourselves for nothing. But the heart can enter with actions of faith and hope, remembering that small seeds can produce large trees. To live is to journey toward a vision. Life force can overcome the obstacles of the seas and rivers on our path. Only then mountains and hills can jump for joy.

PSALM 114 – NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION

When Israel came out of Egypt,
    Jacob from a people of foreign tongue,
Judah became God’s sanctuary,
    Israel his dominion.
The sea looked and fled,
    the Jordan turned back;
the mountains leaped like rams,
    the hills like lambs.
Why was it, sea, that you fled?
    Why, Jordan, did you turn back?
Why, mountains, did you leap like rams,
    you hills, like lambs?
Tremble, earth, at the presence of the Lord,
    at the presence of the God of Jacob,
who turned the rock into a pool,

    the hard rock into springs of water.
