CABEÇA DE MULA

Não seja uma pessoa sem juízo
como o cavalo ou a mula,
que precisam ser guiados
com cabresto e rédeas
para que obedeçam."
Salmo 32.9 (leia 32.1-11) – NTLH

SALMO 32 – NOVA TRADUҪÃO NA LINGUAGEM DE HOJE 2000 (NTLH)

Feliz aquele cujas maldades
    Deus perdoa
e cujos pecados ele apaga!
Feliz aquele que o Senhor Deus
    não acusa de fazer coisas más
e que não age com falsidade!
Enquanto não confessei o meu pecado,
eu me cansava,
    chorando o dia inteiro.
De dia e de noite,
    tu me castigaste, ó Deus,
e as minhas forças se acabaram
como o sereno que seca
    no calor do verão.
Então eu te confessei o meu pecado
e não escondi a minha maldade.
Resolvi confessar tudo a ti,
e tu perdoaste
    todos os meus pecados.
Por isso, nos momentos de angústia,
todos os que são fiéis a ti
    devem orar.
Assim, quando as grandes ondas
    de sofrimento vierem,
não chegarão até eles.
Tu és o meu esconderijo;
tu me livras da aflição.
Eu canto bem alto a tua salvação,
pois me tens protegido.
O Senhor Deus me disse:
“Eu lhe ensinarei o caminho
    por onde você deve ir;

MULE HEADS

Do not be like the horse or the mule,
which have no understanding
but must be controlled by bit and bridle.
Psalm 32:9 (read 32.1-11) – NIV

Those poor mules! They are placed among people who consider themselves to be superior to mules and who assume the right to exploit them. Even after doing all that is required, mules are looked upon as dumb animals. They spend their lives being guided by bits and bridles. They cannot be their own boss and have to do what others command them to do. They are very useful but are under the command of others. They are condemned to live according to the demands of others and to be looked down upon. Poor things!

To what extent are we equal to mules? Do we live according to the expectations of the majority? Do we accept the bridle of popular materialistic values, and are we guided by the bits and bridles of social expectations?

We are surrounded by instruments of social manipulation - all in the name of happiness, popularity and well-being. But in reality, these pressures have a single purpose - economic and political profit to those who are already privileged.

There are a variety of forces in our society that strive to place bridles and bits on the population. They are in the realm of politics, economics and religion. Politicians use the discourse of justice, freedom, security and equality, but in practice they often are really representing special interests and looking out for themselves at the expense of the general population. Economic interests promote consumerism by creating new "needs" and project the image that these new products and fashions bring happiness. Many religions promise the salvation of the soul, prosperity and deliverance from evil. They may attract many followers, but collect offerings from the faithful in order to build sumptuous temples and create economic and political empires. Ironically they make little impact on society. Wars, economic exploitation, social violence and corruption continue as usual. While the temples are being filled to overflowing by faithful seekers, the real demons are loose in society and free to take the general population to self-destruction and doom.

All these forces want the people to have the head of mules and accept bits and bridles. They use people to achieve their own goals and for their own profit in both religious and secular circles.

The great sin of our society is to have unthinking and uncritical heads that accept bits and bridles and do not dare to be different from the majority. The way out is for us to wake up and see where we are being conducted and then change our way of thinking and acting. We need to take the bit between our teeth and go our own way toward a world with peace and justice for all.

Jesus did not accept bits and bridles, nor did he place them on others. He gave to Caesar what which belonged to Caesar but did not submit to Caesar. His commitment was to his heavenly "Daddy" and to all of His creatures in the world. He voluntarily took upon himself the yoke of humanity, but was always his own person. He took the place of a servant without being servile. He gave an example of how to serve without having the head of a mule.

PSALM 32 – NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (NIV)

Blessed is the one
    whose transgressions are forgiven,
    whose sins are covered.
Blessed is the one
    whose sin the Lord does not count against them
    and in whose spirit is no deceit.
When I kept silent,
    my bones wasted away
    through my groaning all day long.
For day and night
    your hand was heavy on me;
my strength was sapped
    as in the heat of summer.
Then I acknowledged my sin to you
    and did not cover up my iniquity.
I said, “I will confess
    my transgressions to the Lord.”
And you forgave
    the guilt of my sin.
Therefore let all the faithful pray to you
    while you may be found;
surely the rising of the mighty waters
    will not reach them.
You are my hiding place;
    you will protect me from trouble
    and surround me with songs of deliverance.
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
    I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.
Do not be like the horse or the mule,
    which have no understanding
but must be controlled by bit and bridle
    or they will not come to you.
Many are the woes of the wicked,
    but the Lord’s unfailing love
    surrounds the one who trusts in him.
Rejoice in the Lord and be glad, you righteous;

    sing, all you who are upright in heart!

TRISTEZA E ALEGRIA

Tu mudaste o meu choro
em dança alegre,
afastaste de mim a tristeza
e me cercaste de alegria.
Salmo 30.11 (leia 30.1-12) – NTLH

As escrituras nascem da experiência humana. Brotam do coração.

A imaginação toma conta. Mas, o dia clareia e revela novos horizontes e caminhos a serem trilhados. Renasce a esperança!...

Nesta esperança, vivemos a paz, confiando no socorro do Deus Eterno.

SALMO 30 – NOVA TRADUҪÃO NA LINGUAGEM DE HOJE 2000 (NTLH)

Ó Senhor Deus, eu te louvo
    porque me socorreste
e não deixaste que os meus inimigos
    zombassem de mim.
Ó Senhor, meu Deus,
    eu gritei pedindo ajuda,
e tu me curaste,
tu me salvaste da morte.
Eu estava entre aqueles que iam
    para o mundo dos mortos,
mas tu me fizeste viver novamente.
Cantem louvor a Deus, o Senhor,
Eu me senti seguro e pensei:
“Nunca terei dificuldades.”
Ó Senhor Deus, tu foste bom para mim
e me protegeste como uma fortaleza
    nas montanhas.
Depois tu te escondeste de mim,
e eu fiquei com medo.
Ó Senhor Deus, eu te chamei
e pedi a tua ajuda.
Se eu morrer,
    que lucrarás com isso?
Será que os mortos podem te louvar?
Será que eles podem anunciar
    que és fiel?
Ó Deus, escuta-me
    e tem compaixão de mim!
Ajuda-me, ó Senhor Deus!
Tu mudaste o meu choro
    em dança alegre,
afastaste de mim a tristeza
e me cercaste de alegria.
Por isso, não ficarei calado,
mas cantarei louvores a ti.
Ó Senhor, tu és o meu Deus;

eu te darei graças para sempre.

FROM SORROW TO JOY

You turned my wailing into dancing;
you removed my sackcloth
and clothed me with joy,
Psalm 30:11 (read 30.1-12) - NIV

The scriptures are born from human experience. They spring from the heart. They portray anxieties and joys, weeping and laughter, doubts and certainties, mourning and celebration, defeats and triumphs, despair and hope, disappointments and surprises, fear and comfort, dissatisfactions and praise, anger and affection, hatred and love. They present the whole mosaic of human feelings.

All feelings are good and occupy a natural part of our personality. Each has its role and its place in the course of life. All are essential to a balanced life and the development of a healthy spirituality. Having only joy would be silly, only sadness would be foolish. Jesus laughed and wept, was pleased and was angry, was joyful and was sad, was comforted and was distressed, was resigned and was revolted, was pro and was con. He experienced both rejection and acceptance. He was loved and was hated.

Nature reinforces the fact of the existence of polarities in life. Day and night form a duet that measures time. The sun and the moon dance together to mark the seasons. Drought, rain, cold and heat, storm and calm work together to produce life. Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter promote the cycles of life.

Nothing is permanent and unchanging. The darkness of night always ends and so does weeping. Our difficulties are not invincible, nor are they permanent defeats. Hope gives us strength to overcome the difficult times of an uphill climb and to reach the top of the mountain that reveals new horizons to be reached.

The period 1985-1986 was one of the worst of my life. I ran the risk of the interruption of my missionary career. It was a time of stress, uncertainty, discomfort, pressures and disappointments. In order to not lose my sanity I would get up early in the mornings and run for at least an hour to ease the tensions.

That same period was also one of the best of my life. I made new friends and discovered new horizons. Illusions evaporated and idols fell. It was the beginning of developing a prophetic and critical view of culture and institutions. I gained a more realistic understanding of the church, the scriptures and the world. Christ became more cosmic and I was able to see Jesus in people whom I had merely tolerated before.

The darkness of night may be a time of weeping because our vision is limited and imagination takes over. But morning brings new light and reveals new horizons and new paths to be followed. With the new dawn, new hope can be reborn.

Globally we are in the period of weeping in the darkness of night. The statistics are bleak and frightening. The Holy Land and Middle East countries are washed daily with the blood of violence and hatred. Violence is becoming global and can strike anywhere at any time. Hunger is more and more a constant reality for millions of human beings. Cheap labor enriches the powerful. Every month hundreds of living species become extinct. The great predator, the human being, continues to ravage his own home, the Earth, suffering the illusion that violence is the solution to problems.

Our hope is that the night will not be eternal and that we will survive to see the light of a new day. Hopefully a new morning will change our rags of mourning into new clothes of joy and that we can dance again. Hopefully the experience of the psalmist can also become ours.

PSALM 30 – NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (NIV)

I will exalt you, Lord,
    for you lifted me out of the depths
    and did not let my enemies gloat over me.
Lord my God, I called to you for help,
    and you healed me.
You, Lord, brought me up from the realm of the dead;
    you spared me from going down to the pit.
Sing the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people;
    praise his holy name.
For his anger lasts only a moment,
    but his favor lasts a lifetime;
weeping may stay for the night,
    but rejoicing comes in the morning.
When I felt secure, I said,
    “I will never be shaken.”
Lord, when you favored me,
    you made my royal mountain stand firm;
but when you hid your face,
    I was dismayed.
To you, Lord, I called;
    to the Lord I cried for mercy:
“What is gained if I am silenced,
    if I go down to the pit?
Will the dust praise you?
    Will it proclaim your faithfulness?
Hear, Lord, and be merciful to me;
    Lord, be my help.”
You turned my wailing into dancing;
    you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,
that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent.

Lord my God, I will praise you forever.

O VERDADEIRO LIVRO DE DEUS

No começo Deus criou os céus e a terra.
Gênesis 1.1
Com o teu poder, puseste as montanhas no lugar,
mostrando assim a tua força poderosa.
Salmo 65.6 (leia 65.1-13) – NTLH

Dia, noite, ciclos lunares, estações, calor, frio, chuva, seca, ventos, trovões, nascimento, morte, animais selvagens, plantas, montanhas, florestas, desertos, abundância, fome, peste, doença, etc. eram as palavras sagradas lidas por todos.

SALMO 65 – NOVA TRADUҪÃO NA LINGUAGEM DE HOJE 2000 (NTLH)
É justo, ó Deus, que o povo te louve
    no monte Sião
e te dê o que prometeu,
pois tu respondes às orações.
Pessoas de toda parte virão te adorar
por causa dos seus pecados.
As nossas faltas nos deixam derrotados,
mas tu nos perdoas.
Como são felizes
    aqueles que tu escolhes,
aqueles que trazes para viverem
    no teu Templo!
Nós ficaremos contentes
    com as coisas boas da tua casa,
com as bênçãos
    do teu santo Templo.
Ó Deus, tu nos respondes,
    dando-nos a vitória,
e fazes coisas maravilhosas
    para nos salvar.
Os povos do mundo inteiro,
até os dos mares distantes,
põem a sua esperança em ti.
Com o teu poder,
    puseste as montanhas no lugar,
mostrando assim
    a tua força poderosa.
Tu acalmas o rugido dos mares
    e o barulho das ondas,
tu acalmas a gritaria dos povos.
Por causa das grandes coisas
    que tens feito,
o mundo todo está cheio de espanto.
Por causa das maravilhas
    que tens feito
há gritos de alegria
    de um lado da terra ao outro.
Fazendo chover, mostras o teu cuidado
    pela terra
e a tornas boa e rica.
e assim a terra produz alimentos,
pois para isso a preparaste.
Regas com muitas chuvas
    as terras aradas,
e elas ficam amolecidas pela água.
Com as chuvas, amacias bem as terras,
e por isso crescem as plantações.
Como é grande a colheita
    que vem da tua bondade!
Por onde passas, há fartura.
Os pastos estão cobertos
    de rebanhos,
e os montes se enchem de alegria.
Os campos estão cobertos
    de carneiros,
e os vales estão cheios de trigo.

Tudo grita e canta de alegria.

THE TRUE BOOK OF GOD

In the beginning God created
the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:1
(You) formed the mountains by your power,
having armed yourself with strength.
Psalm 65:6 (read 65:1-13) - NIV

Creation is the only book written by God. All other books are printed by humans. Our science indicates that the first chapter of God´s book as we know it began to be written about 20 billion years ago with the "big bang". The Earth chapter began to be written about 4.5 billion years ago. Earth existed without the presence of humans during 4,496,000,000 years. Writing appeared only 6,000 years ago.

During most of human development creation (nature) was the only "book" that people had to read. Its words were: day, night, lunar cycles, seasons, warmth, cold, rain, drought, wind, thunder, birth, death, wildlife, plants, mountains, forests, deserts, abundance, famine, pestilence, disease, etc... They were the sacred words and could be read by everyone.

The written word came with the dawn of western "civilization" along with the building of temples to serve as the divine abode. Documents which were written by human hands and within sacred environments built by men came to be revered as “revelation”. Civilized people started to distrust nature and to rely on the scriptures that they themselves composed. The reason is clear: nature has its own personality and is capricious, unpredictable and disrespectful. But paper is friendly and accepts anything written on it. Thus it reflects our desires and pleases us. In our idolatry we worship our own words as though they were divine. We can read the words of the written page, but we are illiterate before the Great Book which was actually written by the divine hand.

Every moment God writes new lines. Each heartbeat is a new sentence. Each blink of an eye can bring new revelations. The psalmist looked at the mountains and the ocean waves with awe and wonder! He read the rain that enables the growing of abundant crops. He realized that God's hand sustains and guides all existence. He rejoiced in the existence of humanity which is also part of the wonder of all being. This revelation of nature made him shout and sing for joy.

In contrast, "civilized" humanity sees itself as the owner of the Earth. It sees immediate advantages instead of beauty. The results are felled trees, burned forests, natural resources plundered, poisoned air, water and soil, thousands of fauna and flora species extinct with the world becoming a giant deposit of plastic and toxic waste with a large part of humanity groaning in pain. Daily It is ripping out pages of the book that God wrote.

Our books of paper, written by human hands, are used to promote hatred, prejudice and violence. The descendants of the authors of the Bible (Jewish and Christian) and the Qur'an use their scriptures to put God in a cage and turn people against one another.

We need to return to the True Book of God to find the words of life. Our salvation is to live in love and harmony with the Creator and all of creation. We are all are part of this universe and have our place under the sun. Love gives freely to everyone.

PSALM 65 – NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (NIV)

Praise awaits you, our God, in Zion;
    to you our vows will be fulfilled.
You who answer prayer,
    to you all people will come.
When we were overwhelmed by sins,
    you forgave our transgressions.
Blessed are those you choose
    and bring near to live in your courts!
We are filled with the good things of your house,
    of your holy temple.
You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds,
    God our Savior,
the hope of all the ends of the earth
    and of the farthest seas,
who formed the mountains by your power,
    having armed yourself with strength,
who stilled the roaring of the seas,
    the roaring of their waves,
    and the turmoil of the nations.
The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders;
    where morning dawns, where evening fades,
    you call forth songs of joy.
You care for the land and water it;
    you enrich it abundantly.
The streams of God are filled with water
    to provide the people with grain,
    for so you have ordained it.
You drench its furrows and level its ridges;
    you soften it with showers and bless its crops.
You crown the year with your bounty,
    and your carts overflow with abundance.
The grasslands of the wilderness overflow;
    the hills are clothed with gladness.
The meadows are covered with flocks
    and the valleys are mantled with grain;

    they shout for joy and sing.
