Agora vou fazer uma coisa nova...

Isaías 43.19a (leia 43.18-25) – NTLH

Nos tempos do profeta, Isaías o povo estava na pior, barrado de voltar para a pátria mãe. Estava à mercê dos poderosos do mundo, sem amigos, condenados à insignificância. Isaías usou a linguagem poética: caminhos e fontes no deserto, estradas e rios em terras secas e o louvor dos animais.

O profeta afirmou que os sofredores não deveriam ficar presos às coisas recentes do passado. Outra coisa nova havia de vir!... Desta vez, Deus usou um pagão, Ciro, rei da Pérsia, para libertá-los e possibilitar seu retorno ao lar.

A natureza está cheia de exemplos de viravoltas.

Durante 130 milhões de anos os dinossauros dominaram a terra e pareciam imbatíveis. Os mamíferos já existiam, mas se limitavam a criaturas pequenas que conseguiam sobreviver se escondendo em buracos e debaixo de pedras e árvores caídas. Mas, há 65 milhões de anos aconteceu uma catástrofe global que destruiu os dinossauros,[1] deixando a terra livre para o desenvolvimento dos mamíferos, evoluíram os primatas, incluindo os Homo sapiens. Os todo-poderosos caíram e os insignificantes tomaram seu lugar.

A história humana, também, é uma série de viravoltas.

Há menos de 2000 anos os habitantes do norte da Europa eram divididos em tribos primitivas com a tecnologia da idade do bronze. A “civilização”, a cultura grega / romana, que dominava aquele mundo antigo se concentrava na área do Mar Mediterrâneo. Hoje, aquelas tribos primitivas são donas de uma tecnologia que chegou a dominar o mundo, trazendo a globalização com todos os seus benefícios e aberrações.

Seja na natureza, seja na história humana, os poderosos são destinados a cair e desaparecer e os insignificantes e fracos elevados e reconhecidos!

Nunca antes na história da humanidade houve tão grande desigualdade entre ricos e pobres. 0,001% da população possui 30% das riquezas do mundo e 99,9% tem apenas 19%.[2]  Um grande segmento da população mundial vive no estado de miséria, sem perspectivas de melhorar. Sua situação é agravada pelo jogo de poder das grandes potências econômicas e seus aliados políticos e militares. No Brasil os sem terra, sem teto e sem emprego têm pouca perspectiva de saírem da sua situação. O sistema econômico usa a tecnologia que elimina a mão de obra, visando maiores lucros para as empresas. Ignora a desigualdade crescente entre as classes econômicas.

O mundo atual precisa de “coisas novas”. Os “desertos” estão precisando de “fontes e caminhos” e as “terras secas” de “rios e estradas”. Este texto de Isaías dá a esperança que coisas novas virão para libertar os oprimidos dos seus opressores. Assim, até os animais selvagens, junto aos humanos louvarão ao Eterno!

Mas devemos lembrar que coisas novas não “caem do céu” Precisam da nossa participação.

Mas agora o Senhor Deus diz ao seu povo:

“Não fiquem lembrando do que aconteceu no passado,

não continuem pensando nas coisas que fiz há muito tempo.

Pois agora vou fazer uma coisa nova,

que logo vai acontecer,

e, de repente, vocês a verão.

Prepararei um caminho no deserto

e farei com que estradas passem em terras secas.

Serei louvado pelos animais selvagens,

pelos chacais e pelos avestruzes.

Pois farei com que jorrem fontes no deserto

e com que rios corram pelas terras secas,

para dar de beber ao meu povo escolhido.

Este é o povo que criei para que fosse meu

a fim de que desse louvores ao meu nome.”

A ingratidão de Israel

O Senhor diz ao seu povo:

“Vocês se enjoaram de mim

e pararam de me adorar.

Vocês não me ofereceram carneiros para serem queimados em sacrifício,

nem me honraram com outros sacrifícios.

Eu não os obriguei a me apresentarem ofertas de cereais,

nem fiquei exigindo que me oferecessem incenso.

Vocês não foram obrigados a comprar plantas cheirosas

para apresentá-las a mim,

nem tiveram de me oferecer a gordura dos animais

para me agradar.

Pelo contrário, vocês me cansaram com os seus pecados

e me aborreceram com as suas maldades.

“Mas eu — eu mesmo — sou o seu Deus

e por isso perdoo os seus pecados e os esqueço.

A NEW THING

I am doing a new thing!

Isaias 43:19a (read 43:18-25) NIV

During the time of the prophet Isaiah the people were barred from returning to their motherland. They were at the mercy of the powerful of the world, without friends and condemned to insignificance. Isaiah used poetic language: “paths and fountains in the desert”, “roads and rivers in drylands” and “the praise of animals” to comfort them.

The prophet said that sufferers should not get attached to things of the recent past. Something new was going to happen! This time God was going to use the pagan king Cyrus, the king of Persia, to release them and allow their return home.

Nature is full of examples of reverses.

For 130 million years dinosaurs ruled the earth and seemed unbeatable. Mammals existed, but were limited to small creatures that could survive hiding in holes and under rocks and fallen trees. But 65 million years ago there was a global catastrophe that destroyed dinosaurs, leaving the land free for mammalian development from which evolved primates, including Homo sapiens. The all-mighty fell and the insignificant took their place [1].

Human history, too, is a series of turn arounds.

About 2500 years ago the inhabitants of northern Europe were divided into tribes with primitive technology. "Civilization," the Greek/Roman culture, which ruled that the ancient world was focused on the area of the Mediterranean Sea. Today, those primitive tribes are the owners of a technology that has come to dominate the world, bringing globalization with all its benefits and aberrations.

In both nature and in human history the powerful are destined to fall and disappear with the insignificant and weak rising to take their place, probably repeating the same errors!

Never before in human history has there been so great an inequality between rich and poor. The richest 0.001% of the people in the world has together 30% of the world’s wealth and the poorest 99.9% has only 19%.[2] A large segment of the world population lives in a state of misery, with no prospect of improvement. Their situation is aggravated by the power plays of major economic powers that control politics and the military. In Brazil the situation is little different with the landless, homeless and jobless having small prospect of escaping their situation. The economic system uses technology which replaces the workforce with machines and electronic equipment. This increases profits for the wealthy and contributes to the growing inequality between the economic classes.

The current world needs "something new". The "deserts" are in need of "fountains and paths" and "dry land" of "rivers and roads". This text from Isaiah gives hope that something new can come to liberate the oppressed from their oppressors. Thus far things seem to be getting worse, but, who knows, there may be something new coming up that we can be thankful for.

We can only do our best and hope.

“Forget the former things;

    do not dwell on the past.

See, I am doing a new thing!

    Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?

I am making a way in the wilderness

    and streams in the wasteland.

The wild animals honor me,

    the jackals and the owls,

because I provide water in the wilderness

    and streams in the wasteland,

to give drink to my people, my chosen,

     the people I formed for myself

    that they may proclaim my praise.

“Yet you have not called on me, Jacob,

    you have not wearied yourselves for[a] me, Israel.

You have not brought me sheep for burnt offerings,

    nor honored me with your sacrifices.

I have not burdened you with grain offerings

    nor wearied you with demands for incense.

You have not bought any fragrant calamus for me,

DESAFIO E ESPERANÇA

Eu sei que o Eterno defenderá a minha causa,
que o meu Deus me recompensará.

Isaías 49.4b (leia 49.1-6) – NTLH

Isaías se sentia mensageiro para “todos os povos do mundo” e tomou sobre si o título: “servo de Deus”. Sentia-se muito pequeno diante de um desafio gigantesco de trazer esperança para seu povo que passava pela maior crise da sua história. Pesava no seu íntimo a frustração do fracasso de ter se esforçado em vão. Mesmo assim, brotava no seu peito uma esperança de que tudo ainda seria recompensado por estar agindo em harmonia com a vontade de Deus. Foi esta consciência que lhe deu forças para não desistir.

Nós conhecemos um universo trilhões de vezes maior do que o de Isaías. A nossa crise é sem precedentes e abrange aspectos que Isaías nem sonhava: cósmica e ameaçadora até da existência da raça humana. A globalização produziu uma crise global: poluição da água e do ar, esgotamento de recursos naturais, desigualdades econômicas e políticas, agravamento de conflitos étnicos e religiosos e o desenvolvimento de armamentos capazes de destruir a humanidade num piscar de olhos.

Diante do caos do início do Século XXI, a crise de Isaías parece pequena. Podemos tirar uma inspiração daquele passado remoto? Acredito que sim.

Deus é cósmico, ou seja, o Deus de toda a criação e, ao mesmo tempo, está presente em cada célula do nosso ser. Continua ativamente presente na Sua criação. Fazemos parte desta criação e de Seus designos. A nossa existência faz parte do Seu plano.

Ao estarmos em sintonia com o sagrado, alcançamos nosso potencial máximo sem esgotar as nossas forças. Ao estarmos em harmonia com a fonte da vida e da criação, ficamos integrados no ecossistema da vida, de tal maneira que os nossos esforços vêm reforçando a própria criação. Ao fazermos parte integral da criação, estamos reforçando a nós mesmos! Ao agirmos a favor dos outros, estamos agindo a favor de nós mesmos! Ao sermos instrumentos do bem estar dos outros, estamos nos beneficiando também.

Ser usado e ser conservado ao mesmo tempo, parece ser um dos princípios da vida! Agir contra a vida e contra o amor é agir contra si mesmo. O pecado mata, mas a justiça vivifica. Ao praticarmos o bem e ao andarmos de acordo com os princípios do universo estamos promovendo e reforçando o sistema da vida. Ao praticarmos o mal e andarmos contra os princípios da vida, estamos, na realidade, nos destruindo. Por isso, a humanidade marcha para sua própria destruição...

A união de Jesus com o Pai é o exemplo máximo da dinâmica de salvação. Para os cristãos, a presença do Espírito de Jesus em nós nos torna agentes de salvação no mundo. Somos chamados para sermos “luz” no mundo e “sal” na terra. Somos chamados para sairmos dos nossos templos e agirmos onde estão as massas e onde o perigo ameaça…

Nações distantes, escutem o que eu, o servo de Deus,

estou dizendo;

prestem atenção, todos os povos do mundo!

Eu ainda estava na barriga da minha mãe,

quando o Senhor Deus me escolheu;

eu nem havia nascido,

quando ele me chamou pelo nome.

Ele fez com que as minhas palavras fossem cortantes como uma espada afiada

e me protegeu com a sua própria mão.

Ele me fez igual a uma flecha pontuda,

uma arma que ele guarda até o momento de ser usada.

Ele me disse: “Israel, você é o meu servo,

e por meio de você vou mostrar a minha grandeza.”

Mas eu pensei: “Todo o meu trabalho não adiantou nada;

todo o meu esforço foi à toa.”

Mesmo assim, eu sei que o Senhor defenderá a minha causa,

que o meu Deus me recompensará.

Quando eu ainda não havia nascido,

o Senhor me escolheu para ser o seu servo

a fim de que eu reunisse o seu povo

e o trouxesse de volta para ele.

Sou muito estimado pelo Senhor;

o meu Deus é a minha força.

O Senhor me disse:

“Você não será apenas o meu servo

que trará de volta os israelitas que ficaram vivos

e criará de novo a nação de Israel.

Eu farei também com que você seja uma luz para os outros povos

a fim de levar a minha salvação ao mundo inteiro.”

LABORING IN LOVE AND HOPE

I have labored in vain;
I have spent my strength for nothing at all.
Yet what is due me is in the Lord’s hand,
and my reward is with my God.

Isaiah 49:4b (read 49:1-6) NIV

Isaiah felt that he was a messenger to "all peoples of the world" and took upon himself the title "Servant of God". He felt very small before the huge challenge of bringing hope to people who were going through the greatest crisis in their history. Not seeing results made the feeling of frustration weigh heavily upon him, and he felt the failure of having strived in vain. Even so, there sprang up in his chest a hope that everything would still be rewarded for acting in harmony with the will of God. It was this consciousness that gave him the strength to not give up.

We know that the universe is trillions of times greater than Isaiah thought it to be. Our present day crisis is unprecedented and covers aspects that Isaiah never dreamed of. It even threatens the existence of the whole human race. Globalization has produced a global crisis: water and air pollution, depletion of natural resources, economic and political inequalities, loss of ethical values, religious conflicts and the development of weapons capable of destroying most of life on Earth in the blink of an eye.

Faced with our chaos of the early twenty-first century, the crisis of Isaiah seems small. Can we draw inspiration from that remote past? I believe so.

With a more ample vision of the universe (multiverse) we need a broader vision of God. We could identify God as being cosmic, as being the consciousness of the whole multiverse and present in every atom and every cell of our body. We are an integral part of this multiverse. Our existence is a part of the scheme of things and fits into the whole. We influence the whole and are influenced by it. Life is an interchange. The sacred and the multiverse are one and the same.

By being in tune with the sacred whole we reach our fullest potential without exhausting our strength. Harmony is letting ourselves be integrated into the mega system of life. As we act on behalf of others, we are acting on behalf of ourselves! To be instruments of the welfare of others, we are also benefiting ourselves.

Being useful and being preserved at the same time is one of the principles of life! To act against others and against love is to act against ourselves. Sin kills, but justice quickens. By practicing goodness and walking according to the principles of the universe we are promoting and strengthening the system of life. By practicing evil and walking against the principles of life, we are actually destroying ourselves. This being true, humanity seems to be marching to its own destruction.

Using biblical symbolism, the union of Jesus with the Father is the ultimate example of the dynamics of salvation. For Christians, the presence of the Spirit of Jesus in them makes them agents of salvation in the world. They are called to be "light" in the world and "salt" on the earth. They are called to come out of the temples and act where the masses are and where danger threatens.

We may not be able to see immediately that by acting in accordance to the principles of love and justice that we are really making any difference in the world, but we can do so, trusting that we are not acting in vain. We can only do our part and leave it up to the future to germinate the good seed that we sow. We may feel that we are acting in vain, but we can hope that what we are planting will bear beneficial fruits.

Listen to me, you islands;

    hear this, you distant nations:

Before I was born the Lord called me;

    from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name.

He made my mouth like a sharpened sword,

    in the shadow of his hand he hid me;

He said to me, “You are my servant,

    Israel, in whom I will display my splendor.”

But I said, “I have labored in vain;

to bring Jacob back to him

NO FUNDO DO POÇO

O Deus Eterno não se importa conosco,
o nosso Deus não se interessa pela nossa situação?”

Isaías 40.27b (leia 40.21-31) – NTLH

O povo tinha sofrido a desgraça e estava fora do seu país, humilhado, explorado e sem esperança. Achava Deus indiferente à sua situação. Sentia-se abandonado e entregue à própria sorte. Tinha chegado ao “fundo do poço”.

Mas o profeta afirmou que não era assim, e que, desde a criação, Deus está dentro de tudo que se passa. Os seus propósitos estão fora do alcance do nosso entendimento. Ele é incansável em prosseguir no seu plano e pode dar novas forças aos cansados que confiam nEle. A confiança faz que se encontre força e energia no cansaço e na fraqueza. Em outras palavras: “no fundo do poço é onde se encontra água”.

Passado mais de 2600 anos, podemos ainda encontra inspiração para a nossa época? A nossa realidade é muito diferente daquela do Povo de Israel. A grande desgraça do povo era o exílio: forçado a morar na Babilônia, impedido de ocupar a sua terra natal. As circunstâncias históricas daquela época pouco têm a ver com a nossa vida, leitores destas palavras. Aparentemente a maioria está conseguindo ocupar seu espaço de direito e participar de seus privilégios. Até dizemos que Deus é Brasileiro!...

Mas por outro lado existem outras realidades. Uma delas é representada pelo filme cinematográfico “Cidade de Deus” de Fernando Meirelles. Há grandes segmentos da sociedade brasileira que vivem outro tipo de exílio, impedidos de desfrutar de uma vida de dignidade. Há grandes comunidades de favelados, dominados pela pobreza e a marginalidade. Existem os analfabetos, desempregados, subempregados, sem terra, sem teto, trabalhadores infantis e rurais em regime semiescravo que vivem à margem da sociedade. É uma espécie de exílio dentro de casa. A distribuição de riquezas se concentra cada vez mais com uma pequena minoria, deixando a maioria como cidadãos de segunda classe. O filme “Tropa de Elite” de José Padilha revela que também há muitos que pertencem as classes média e alta, exilados da vida real, viciados pelas drogas sustentando o crime organizado.

No cenário global a situação não é diferente. Os países mais ricos sugam os recursos dos mais pobres e populosos. Uns vivem em abundância e outros mal conseguem sobreviver. Ao lado da subnutrição existe o problema da obesidade.

A fauna e a flora também estão perdendo seu espaço no planeta. O IBAMA (www.ibama.gov.br) publicou uma lista de 627 espécies da fauna brasileira ameaçadas de extinção. O mesmo está acontecendo com a flora. Todo o planeta Terra está sendo atingido pelo egoísmo e desprezo humano.

Deus importa conosco? Interessa-se com a nossa situação? Ele ainda está presente e governando ou já se cansou, desistiu e foi embora? Diante de tanta desgraça, muitos acham que Deus nem existe! Já cansaram e tropeçaram, dominados pela descrença e desespero.

Outras perguntas tão importantes: Nós nos importamos com a injustiça social e econômica? Nós nos importamos com a violência dos donos do poder contra os outros seres humanos indefesos? Nós nos importamos com a ganância materialista que devasta a fauna e a flor e está esgotando os recursos naturais da terra? Nós nos importamos com o envenenamento do ar, do solo e da água para os fins lucrativos?

Não adianta Deus importar conosco se nós não importamos com a nossa coletividade e as futuras gerações. Sim, estamos no fundo do poço, mas cabe a nós tomar providências para descobrir a água e como sair do buraco que nós mesmos cavamos.

Será que vocês não sabem?

Será que nunca ouviram falar disso?

Não lhes contaram há muito tempo

como o mundo foi criado?

O Criador de todas as coisas

é aquele que se senta no seu trono no céu;

ele está tão longe da terra,

que os seres humanos lhe parecem tão pequenos como formigas.

Foi ele quem estendeu os céus como um véu,

quem os armou como uma barraca para neles morar.

É ele quem rebaixa reis poderosos

e tira altas autoridades do poder.

Eles são como plantas que brotaram há pouco

e quase não têm raízes.

Quando Deus sopra neles, eles murcham,

e a ventania os leva para longe, como se fossem palha.

Com quem vocês vão comparar o Santo Deus?

Quem é igual a ele?

Olhem para o céu e vejam as estrelas.

Quem foi que as criou?

Foi aquele que as faz sair em ordem como um exército;

ele sabe quantas são

e chama cada uma pelo seu nome.

A sua força e o seu poder são tão grandes,

que nenhuma delas deixa de responder.

Novas forças para os fracos

Povo de Israel, por que você se queixa, dizendo:

“O Senhor não se importa conosco,

o nosso Deus não se interessa pela nossa situação”?

Será que vocês não sabem?

Será que nunca ouviram falar disso?

O Senhor é o Deus Eterno,

ele criou o mundo inteiro.

Ele não se cansa, não fica fatigado;

ninguém pode medir a sua sabedoria.

Aos cansados ele dá novas forças

e enche de energia os fracos.

Até os jovens se cansam,

e os moços tropeçam e caem;

mas os que confiam no Senhor

recebem sempre novas forças.

Voam nas alturas como águias,

correm e não perdem as forças,

andam e não se cansam.

THE BOTTOM OF THE PIT

My way is hidden from the Lord;
my cause is disregarded by my God.

Isaiah 40:27b (read 40:21-31) NIV

The people had suffered disgrace and were exiled from their country, humiliated, exploited and hopeless. They thought God indifferent to their situation, felt abandoned and left to fend for themselves. They had reached "bottom of the pit".

But the prophet said that was not so, and that, since the creation, God is within everything that happens. His purposes are beyond our understanding. He is relentless in pursuing his plan and can give new strength to the weary who trust in Him. Confidence gives power and energy in the face of exhaustion and weakness. In other words: "the bottom of the pit is where we find water".

Can we still find inspiration for our time after 2600 years have passed since this writing and our concept of the world has changed? Our reality is very different from that of the People of Israel. Their great misfortune was the exile: forced to live in Babylon far from their homeland. The historical circumstances of that time in the long past has little in common with our lives today. We are in our own country or where we choose to be. We do not feel the absence of God. Brazilians like to jest that God is Brazilian and Americans think of God as blessing America only.

But then there are other realities. One is represented by the motion picture film "City of God" (Cidade de Deus) by Fernando Meirelles. There are large segments of Brazilian society who live another kind of exile, unable to enjoy a life of dignity. There are large squatter communities, dominated by poverty and marginalization. There are illiterate, unemployed, underemployed, landless, homeless, working children and rural areas in semi-slave conditions on the margins of society. It is an “indoor exile”. The distribution of wealth is increasingly concentrated in a small minority, leaving the majority as second-class citizens. The film "Elite Squad” (Tropa de Elite) by José Padilha reveals that there are also many who belong to the middle and upper classes, exiled from real life, supporting organized crime by being drug addicts.

The United States is also a nation of many “indoor exiles”. With mass incarcerations it has more people per capita in prisons than any other country in the world. With less than 5% of the world population the US has 25% of the world’s prisoners of which 45% are afro decent. Other segments of indoor exiles are the migrant farm workers working under slave conditions and the millions who are forced to take temporary jobs at a less than livable minimum salary without fringe benefits in commerce and service industries.

In the global scenario the situation is no different. Richer countries suck the resources of the poor and the populous. A few live in abundance while the majority barely survives. Wars and political violence have produced millions of widows, orphans and refugees who struggle to just stay alive.

The fauna and flora are also losing their space on the planet. IBAMA (www.ibama.gov.br) published a list of 627 species of Brazilian fauna threatened with extinction. The same is happening with the flora. The whole planet Earth is being hit by human selfishness and contempt.

It is hypocritical to ask if God cares about us. This whole situation is manmade. The honest question is “Do we care?” Do we care about the social and economic injustice? Do we care about the violence of those in power against the other defenseless human beings? Do we care about materialistic greed which devastates wildlife and flowers and is depleting the earth's natural resources? Do we care about the poisoning of the air, soil and water for profit? It’s no use trying to evoke God. We are at the bottom of the pit, and it is up to us to take action, to find the water and get out of the hole we have dug for ourselves.

Do you not know?

    Have you not heard?

Has it not been told you from the beginning?

    Have you not understood since the earth was founded?

He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth,

    and its people are like grasshoppers.

He stretches out the heavens like a canopy,

    and spreads them out like a tent to live in.

He brings princes to naught

    and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing.

No sooner are they planted,

    no sooner are they sown,

    no sooner do they take root in the ground,

than he blows on them and they wither,

    and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.

“To whom will you compare me?

    Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One.

Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens:

    Who created all these?

He who brings out the starry host one by one

    and calls forth each of them by name.

Because of his great power and mighty strength,

    not one of them is missing.

Why do you complain, Jacob?

    Why do you say, Israel,

“My way is hidden from the Lord;

    my cause is disregarded by my God”?

Do you not know?

    Have you not heard?

The Lord is the everlasting God,

    the Creator of the ends of the earth.

He will not grow tired or weary,

    and his understanding no one can fathom.

He gives strength to the weary

    and increases the power of the weak.

Even youths grow tired and weary,

    and young men stumble and fall;

but those who hope in the Lord

    will renew their strength.

They will soar on wings like eagles;

    they will run and not grow weary,

    they will walk and not be faint.
